Golf MK5 Speaker Replacements

I recently purchased an Alpine head unit:

I'm wondering what I ought to check out in the line of speakers to compliment it. It's a van-type 3 door, so I'm looking for a 3-way system, not pushed about a subwoofer and amp (if I can get away with it).

The Alpine head unit is really crisp and full of detail, but the stock speakers get fairly harsh too soon.

    Thanks in advance!

Pretty nice headunit. Decent output 4x50W

Know a bit about car speakers so heres my 2c

Agree 3-Way speakers have better sound but without an amp or proper wiring yo wont notice too much of a difference.

You dont need an AMP or woofer unless you want to be heard in the next town or are trying to impress a carpark full of skangers.

No need to re-wire if you're not sticking in an amp.

My advice is stick it in and then see what the speakers are like. Mess with the settings (i.e. Treble/Bass) until you get a good sound off it (I like almost full Treble & about half bass so I can hear the lyrics and the bass is nice but not obtrusive).

Stock speakers can be a mixed bag. My first 95 corolla had amazing front speakers (Fujitsu I think they were, amazing bass out of them you could feel it on your leg when it was on full) so I left them in. Changed out the rear ones just for the craic for excellent JVC 6x9 ones I bought secondhand for €20. Lovely sound outta that car.
In contrast the sound out of my e36 speakers (Nokia POS ones) was horrible, ratty, no bass so stuck in a set of Sony X-PLOD in the rear (didnt bother changing the tweeters or front speakers just turned the fader on 3/4 to the rear so most the sound came out the back).

SO long store short, see if the sound is ok with the stock speakers (dont forget change the settings they can transform the speakers), if not then think about changing. No point in buying speakers now only to discover the ones you bought are too big (i've stupidly done this). Check the size THEN buy. Adverts or the other classifieds are great places you can pick up decent speakers for cheap enough money, keep an eye out.

    God luck with it.

There is a company called Rainbow Audio who do car-specific speaker upgrades for the Mk5 Golf among others. Have a look here, it's the IQ Line: http://www.rainbow-audio.de/

Being the Mk5 I can only assume they are the same setup as the ones in my Octavia.

If so you will have to buy/make a baffle to mount the speaker on.

Personally if you are on a budget I would look at these.

Do a bit of sound deadening in the doors while you are at it.

Just a note as well, I'm sure you already know, but just in case, that head unit won't fit unless you get an adaptor plate for both it and the fascia.

    Indeed.
As in this sort of part
