06 Ford S Max Problem

Hi all, I wonder if anybody can shed some light on my problem.

I have a 06 diesel tdci smax with nearly 200k kilometres on it. Timing belt was done last year on it and it will be due a service in the next 2-3 months. Recently I was very late for an appointment and when I jumped into the car the fuel gauge was at rock bottom. After hurriedly sticking 20 euro worth of diesel in it I drove the car fairly hard including accelerating very hard. The engine malfunction light came on and the power in the car went. I could only get it to 80 kph and that was it. I got to my destination (very late!!) and turned off the car engine and did my thing at the appointment.

When I returned to the car about half an hour later, the engine light didn't come on when I turned the engine and the car drove fine all the way home.

The car still drives fine but some days the engine malfunction light comes on but the car drives fine. Other days it wont come on at all. Can anybody shed some light on what is going on? I would bring it to a garage for diagnostics but i cant afford to at the moment.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ron

There isn't any other option at the moment I'm afraid. There are far to many things which could cause power loss on a modern diesel.

OP - check back my posts on this as I had similar on SMax, far lower mileage though. Put it in for service and they diagnosed "low fuel pressure" and fuel filter was changed as part of service, and that was said to likely fix. Anyway, light came on again when flooring it to overtake on motorway and I had to limp at 80Km too.

Brought it back to garage again and they did more diagnostics on it and ended up putting a fuel cleaner through it as they reckoned it was getting a bit clogged up due to short hop driving... I didn't believe this but turned out to have been correct; so far!

Think he put "diptane" through it and we had to run it down low then brim it again.

Haven't had light on now in about 6 weeks and definitely less black smoke out the back too.

When I was digging around on this issue it seemed very common on Ford's that the engine malfunction light comes on so cannot be sure same issue for yours.
