Tour of Ulster

Congrats to Ryan Sherlock getting Stage Four of the Tour of Ulster last weekend.

I've got a question though - how tempted must he have been to go for the overall after finding himself in a break with Adam Armstrong (overall winner) knowing there was only 16 seconds between them?

Just looking for an insight into what factors come in play in this sort of situation...were they going to fast for Ryan to attempt pulling out 200 metres over Armstrong? Just too knackered? No opportunities to exploit a chance for a break?

Ryan might be along with some comments himself, but this is from his blog
When I was in Adams draft, I say he was either in the 11 or 12 cog - trucking! We continued to ride and the gap quickly grew. Adam rode all of the climbs full gas (only very short climbs 30-45 seconds on the course) to show me that he wasn't going to be dropped.

The two of them pulled out a big gap over the chasing group so I'd say they were both flat to the boards.

Thanks Nilhg - yeah, I was half-thinking that the man himself might weigh in with some comments but the blog pretty much says it all. Sounds like Armstrong had plenty of gas in the tank.

Still - it must be have hard to ignore the "death or glory" thoughts that must have entered his head at some stage...!

I would of course loved to have won the whole thing. As I said, Armstrong rode all the climbs (very short) full gas, I tried a few times to slip away - didn't happen but was able to get the uphill finish. Until Armstrong and I got away, he was playing the perfect teammate - he got to sit in a lot - I was riding a lot more (although, in those conditions - that was possibly better! It was COLD & wet) during the stage.

Great race if anyone is interested for next year.
