With only 1 week of the season left I'm sure we have enough material to cover one of these threads. Not much will change with regard to player of the season etc in the space of 1 more match-day weekend. Although I did say this last year and the last game of the season produced the classic between Wigan and West Ham, so you never know :pac:

    Anyway:

Player of the season: Robin Van Persie

Signing of the season: James McClean

Worst player of the season: Roger Johnson

Worst signing of the season: Roger Johnson, closely followed by Joey Barton

Manager of the season: Alan Pardew

Goal of the season: Peter Crouch V Manchester City

Save of the season: De Gea from Mata's free kick

Game of the season: Manchester United 4-4 Everton

Performance of the season: Manchester City's 6-1 win at Old Trafford

    Overachievers: Newcastle

    Underachievers: Liverpool

Shock of the season: The racism scandal

Don't want to fill out all the categories. I'd just like to nominate Stewart Downing for worst player of the season. 35 games 0 goals 1 assist.

Player of the season: Robin Van Persie, no questions

Signing of the season: James McClean, quality player with a great attitude and work rate

Worst player of the season: Downing, has been consistently awful

Worst signing of the season: Roger Johnson, bad attitude

Manager of the season: Alan Pardew, don't like him but can't ignore the job he's done and the bargains he's got

Goal of the season: RVP against Everton or Ben Arfa's were my favourites, Cisse probably the best

Save of the season: Cech FA Cup final (not sure how people consider De Gea's save better, really great save but Cech's was unbelievable especially given when and where it happened)

Game of the season: City 6-1 win, entertaining and shocking

Performance of the season: Manchester City's 6-1 win at Old Trafford

Overachievers: Newcastle, still may get champions league football and that says it all

Underachievers: Stoke, sidetracked by europe but still poor by their standards

Shock of the season: United going out in the groups of CL and then being beaten off the park by Bilbao. I expected United to have another good run in the CL this year, thought they would have a great shot at beating everyone but Madrid/Barca

Probably is because they did alright in Europe but their league form suffered which is why I put them in there. I think they could put out 2 PL standard starting 11s so with the squad they have I honestly think they should be finishing better than 14th. I thought they'd push on this year but they haven't really progressed IMO.

Have been on the beach in recent weeks though. Here's hoping they capitulate enough tomorrow to allow Bolton to stay up :D

There was somebody on Sky Sports that was saying Stoke could push for top four. Think it was after they signed Crouch. Obviously they never really had a hope of that, but I'd say most people expected them to finish above where they are now.

Nah I wouldn't have expect top4 myself but I'd have expected them to compete with the likes of Everton and Liverpool to finish in the top6 (didn't think Newcastle would finish as high as they have at the time, obviously!). They're squad is very good and I thought that would stand to them over the course of a long season. I think they're poor league form is due to focusing on doing well in Europe. I'd expect them to be competing for places 6-7 next year without European distractions. Maybe I'm over-rating them!

I remember someone on boards predicting Bolton getting 4th this season, after the 1st game of the season when they beat QPR 4-0.

I'll do one for the other leagues in Europe too.

Player of the season: Leo Messi

Signing of the season: Andrea Pirlo

Worst player of the season: Gerard Pique

Worst signing of the season: Santiago Silva, sums up Fiorentina quite nicely this season.

Manager of the season: Jurgen Klopp. Beaten a very strong Bayern side home and away and retained the title, blooded players and playing good football while doing it.

Goal of the season: Mauri vs Napoli. Holy balls.

Save of the season: Not sure.

Game of the season: Juventus 3-3 Napoli

Performance of the season: Real Madrid away to Barca

    Overachievers: Levante

Underachievers: Villareal, to say the least!

Shock of the season: Madrid toppling Barca.

£18m for a keeper who can't even catch a ball is the biggest joke of the season.

No, he's been servicable since his early errors.

United fans have convinced themselves that he is World Class, whenever he makes a "camera save" (big dive, at full stretch when there is no need). He has made some fantastic saves, and has the potential to be a great keeper, but he was poor this season, no matter which way you spin it. Its like us Liverpool fans creaming ourselves over 2 good games by Andy Carroll, or Chelsea fans after Torres got the goal vs Barca and the Hat-Trick vs QPR.

All fans do it, so its not having a go at United. Its a natural reaction to a Big money player, who has been playing poorly, suddenly becoming servicable.

I wouldn't personally have him as the Worst of the season, but for the Money paid, especially for a Goalkeeper, he is among the worst.

For the Record I think Stewart Downing was the worst signing, in terms of value for money this season. Or Charlie "his corners are worth 10m alone" Adam.

No it's not. De Gea has been far more consistent this season that Carroll or Torres, no matter what way you spin it.

He had a dodgy start and was poor in his first few games. He was then very good for the next 3 months, up until Christmas he excelled in difficult away games like Stoke and Liverpool. He was then poor against Blackburn and Liverpool in the FA cup but has been very good since then. He has bailed us out on several occasions this season.

To even mention de Gea's season in the same breath as Carroll's or Torres', is an absolute joke.

+1 Stoke have spent a fortune the last couple of years.

Re De Gea; he's done alright for his first season, nowhere near the worst signing, but Ferguson is right in saying he needs to spend the summer in the gym. The way Liverpool bullied him in the FA Cup pointed to a guy physically out of his depth. But that's easily fixed so I don't doubt he'll turn out to be a top class keeper.

Not really, going on cleen sheets De Gea sits joint 6th with Pepe Reina, who any Liverpool fan will tell you, had a terrible season.

That puts him behind Joe Hart, Tim Krul, Szczesny, Vorm, Friedel and level with Reina and Tim Howard.

If you are happy with that and think he is World/Top Class after such a season then fair enough.

I know he has improved, and I accept that, but Carroll has improved. Hell Carroll bailed us out in a few games, but that doesn't make him Top Class.

Of course De Gea was going to improve after such a terrible start, It would be hard not to, but what I am saying is that while the improvement has been great, it doesn't make him the Top Quality player that you have convinced yourself that he is.

Anyway, this is not a Liverpool/United pissing contest, I just wanted to put my point of view across. I understand everyone has an opinion and I respect yours!

EDIT: Just for argument's sake these are De Gea's stats up to the 4th of January (just before the 3-0 loss to Newcastle where Lindegaard started).

    Lindegaard-v-de-Gea.jpg

He started 14 more games (so its the halfway point of his season). Has 7 more clean sheets, so improved by 2 clean sheets. 44 more saves, so 12 less then the first half of the season. His current stats are coming from here:
    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/108482/david-de-gea?cc=5739

I don't know, on the pitch it looks like he's improved 10 fold, and I suppose thats all that matters. What was so worrying to so many people was his demeanor on the field, especially against Liverpool where he got bullied. He now looks like he belongs out there, and as I said, I believe he will be a good goalkeeper. Just not as good as people currently believe.

Clean sheets don't only judge goalkeepers. Consider defenders as well. It's not helped De Gea that United have had a constantly changing defence, as well as Evra.

And clean sheets aren't that useful anyway, imo. You can have a stormer and be beaten by a moment of genius (Cisse vs Chelsea) or an own goal (Jones scoring for Bolton) or a defensive fail (United vs Blackburn Yakubu's goal much?) or a deflection (Holt vs Arsenal) or something, and then you can have a clean sheet in a match where you didn't get a shot at you. It's clear which keeper did better - the one who didn't keep a clean sheet.

You cannot blame goalkeepers for every goal conceded, so clean sheets are not as useful as you might think. De Gea may have kept the same number of clean sheets as Reina, but Reina's had a clearly worse season. I can think of 4, maybe 5 games where DDG clearly been struggling (Most of them at the start of the season) - a few more in Reina's case.

That's a very fair point GK; I can think of a couple of games where De Gea has kept United in it - Bilbao and Blackburn are the two to come to mind whereas for Liverpool I can't think of any match Reina has kept them in it. In fact you could arguable point to a couple where he's cost Liverpool points.

+1 Stoke have spent a fortune the last couple of years.

The big thing is they haven't made anything back either. They've spent big money on older players that will likely have no return at all. Take Crouch for example, £10m and £60,000 a week. Madness for a mid-table club to spend that on 30 year old (31 now).

    £8m on Kenwyne Jones.

£5m each on Huth, Whitehead and Tuncay.

You should be happy to see them continue on in that vein Paully, Sunderland have done quite well out of them! £8m for Kenwyne Jones... I'd say Quinny struggled to keep a straight face at that one honestly.

At the time I was disappointed to see Kenwyne go to be honest. That first season in the Premier League he was absolutely unplayable, Terry even said he was the toughest striker he had faced that year. After that though he picked up an injury and came back too bulked up, it slowed him down a lot, and it later transpired that he was constantly being fined for being late for training and generally just didn't give a ****.

Aye, looking back now that was a very good deal for us. Stoke play in such a way that Jones should thrive, but if he can't make it at Stoke with a team built to suit strikers of his style, he won't anywhere else.
