I need something bigger and these two are currently top of my list. Looks like the Superb estate is out of my price range, but the saloon version seems massive regardless.

Both 2009, €19k+- 2L TDI Superb or 2L petrol V70, both with around 30k miles. Both nicely specced.

Does the better economy of the Superb (tax and diesel etc.) win out over the lovelyness of the V70?! (Do about 10/12,000km year currently).

I nearly bought a new V70 last year and ended up going for the superb estate.

In a decent spec level the superb has as much 'loveliness' of the v70

€19k seems very expensive for a 3 year old Superb. Can you not buy a brand new Superb diesel for about €25k?

1.4 basic spec then yes, but €34k for the one I am looking at.

While the interior of the V70 is lovely, the 2.0iFF petrol engine isn't so good.

I was seriously tempted by an 08 S80 2.0iFF SE Lux that we had back last year, but took it for a spin to pick something else up, and it's very underpowered. V70 is a bit heavier than the S80 as well so will be even worse.

Also the 2.0 FF is in tax band F, so that's over €1100 tax a year for a poverty spec 2.0 litre petrol with only 145 bhp:eek:!

Try and look at a D5, or at least the 2.0 diesel anyway.

Petrols depreciate much faster than diesels therefore they are out of my price range for the Volvo. As for poverty spec  Spec is regardless of engine size and this one is very nicely specced (family pack etc.).

Try and look at a 08 V70 then, at least if it's been registered before July 08 then it will be taxed on engine size than emissions, which is much more reasonable.

I just think that a 2.0 petrol V70 especially on the new system will be totally saleproof, and while I don't mind paying more than the average person on motor tax, I see no reason whatsoever to pay that kind of money to tax a very low powered petrol estate. If I was paying that much to tax a car, I'd want something with a lot more power:)!

That petrol V70 would be sale proof whenever you decide to sell it on, I would not pump €19+ of my money into one.

How about a Honda Accord Tourer:

Mileage is above average for the year but it has a FHSH and well speced.

Would an '08 520d touring be in budget? Cheaper than the others in tax and fuel use, more powerful too. And with the added bonus of being a BMW :D

Dunno, BIL has a 525i estate and the new V70 is a far superior family wagon when it comes to space and ergonamics. Much more comfortable suspension and seats too which in a car like this is probably more important than outright pace or RWD.

If you want comfy, BMW is not the right car for you (unless you go 7-series) :)
