Advice on rail cards?

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that someone here who might have done this before can give me some advice on the most cost effective way for me to travel by train on my itinerary below. There seems to be a few card options out there but I'm having trouble figuring out whats best and how to use them (such as if booking is still required or can I just hop on and off trains at will?)

I am Irish and my friend is American, we'll both fly separately to Geneva and meet there. We're also both age 24 (I know this can affect card price)

Day 1 - Fly into Geneva, hotels give free travel passes for the city here so that I'm covered for.
Day 2 - Continue exploring geneva
Day 3 - Get train to Lucerne/Luzern from Geneva in the morning. From what I've seen this ticket is about €30 on sbb.ch without card discounts
Day 4 - Continue exploring Lucerne. We will be getting a train from Lucerne to Alpanach to visit Mt Pilatus, and will be getting a cable car also. I know the Swiss Pass covers these.
Day 5 - Get train from Lucerne to Salzburg in the morning. I think I have to get a connection at Zurich. Going to Salzburg as my Aunt lives there so free accommodation yay! This is where the Swiss Pass stops working as I leave Switzerland and I'm unsure that if I used it to get a ticket to Salzburg, would I be having to pay the ticket guy on the train for the cost of Zurich - Salzburg unexpectedly or something.
Day 6 - 10 - Chill out in Austria. Possibly take a day trip to Vienna. Will also be getting a return train to Werfen to see the Eisriesenwelt ice caves. I'm not sure what travel card options Austria has.
Day 11 - Get train at midnight from Salzburg to Venice. This gets pricy if we want a sleeper carriage. But its nice that we get to arrive in Venice at 8am and ready to explore.
Day 12 - 14 - Explore Venice. Not much travelling to do here apart from the vaporettos to the islands. Then we fly back home from Venice Airport

I was looking at getting an Inter Rail card on raildude.com or interrailnet.com or their many counterparts, but still not sure if that will work out best cost-wise.

Anyone got some advice to offer?
