Just been announced at Tara street that due to a major signalling failure in the maynooth area the 23:10 is going to clonsilla only

People told to take the bus instead

    I love that.

There is no bus from Drumcondra, Ashtown, Broombridge, Navan Rd P+R, Castleknock, or Coolmine that goes to Maynooth or Leixlip.

    I know!

Surely they'd reimburse taxi fares of those people who would have been in that situation,

It was announced at Tara st so surely those going to Maynooth or Leixlip would have got off there and got a bus from around the corner on Westmoreland street?

Presumably a taxi would be ordered - numbers would not be that great!

The 23:17 is usually full, as it's the last train.

Not from people boarding beyond Connolly it isn't.

Its often busy from Drumcondra. Further out, I'd agree.

I guess the point I'm making is that it's far easier to put the city centre people on a bus and then provide taxis for anyone else. One would hope that is what they did.

I'm kinda glad I decided to stay at home tonight. I could have been left out on a limb as I was planning to get that train back.

Did they say that DB were accepting all rail tickets?

The point you're trying to make is blind defence of CIE, where as the reality is "get the bus" isn't good enough.

Would be directed to return to Tara st to get a bus from the city centre.

If there's a signalling fault, what else can they do? Organising a rail replacement bus to serve exactly (and only) the affected stations would be better but a) it only affected a single train and b) since we insist on duplicating all our train lines with DB bus routes, what's the point?

 What does someone who is in Castleknock and wants to travel to Maynooth do?

    DART back? Shanks mare?

To be fair it was 11 in the evening, its after business hours and kind hard to organise a bus transfer that late.

That line is not DART, it'd Suburban. There are no trains back at that hour. It's a 2 hour walk to the city centre.

To be fair it's kind of late to be abandoning ticket holders in stations where there is no alternative transport to get them to their destinations.

Wait, so this happened at clonsilla? If your in the city centre just get bus back to maynooth.

The 66 will get you there.

Otherwise, due to the late hour there isn't much hope in getting a replacement bus service to serve each station. Taxi is your best luck.

And even if they could get back, by the time they do get to town, the last bus would have already left. Think these things through before you say them Foggy!

    Two problems with that.

1: There's no train to get back
2: By the time they return to Tara - if they wait for the same train to return in - there won't *be* any buses.

In fairness to foggy it was a Friday night so there would have been nitelinks (one to maynooth @ 00.30, one to leixlip Louisa bridge @ 00.30) any other night and that would have been ruled out. Usually the inbound leaves clonsilla-castleknock before the outbound arrives so that might have been too late but given the signalling failure in the maynooth area the inbound may have been stuck in maynooth so the 23.10 ex pearse may have had to return in service back to Dublin. Who knows.

With regards to buses in the area, the last 39 to the city usually passes the station before the train arrives so that's probably out of the question. The 239 bus passes the station to Lucan village where people could connect with the 66/67 but the last 239 was changed from 23.30 to 22.30 a while ago so that was also out of the question.

You'd be surprised passenger numbers who board at these stations going to maynooth in particular on a Friday/Saturday, nowhere near the numbers boarding at the city but I'd say 20% is still reasonable numbers.

I'd hope in this scenario lxflyer is right and they put on taxis. Having to spend an extra 1.5-2 hours travelling for a journey that is usually 15-20 minutes would wear anyone out especially late at night.

They've never put on taxis. The attitude is make your own way home.

Nitelinks cost €5, many weekly/monthly tickets exclude them. Can't see them being able to contact DB to get drivers informed to accept train tickets at that time of night either.

Getting a taxi from Irish Rail requires a station masters approval to put it on the account. Try getting one of these at 11pm on a Friday night.

(that said, I was put in a taxi as the only customer at Pearse for the last train one night during the weekend DART closures, I've no idea what they did to check there was nobody waiting at the intermediate stations. Train was not run).
