Out of date gels

I have a half marathon tomorrow and went rooting for a gel to take. I found a few but they where out of date in September '11. Will it be ok to take one or could I end up dead or worse (like dunging myself).
    Thanks

It's a gamble, but you'll probably be fine, gels being artificial muck anyway. Personally I wouldn't chance "Cause of death: scaldyhole" on the official excel file, but I'm a cautious individual.

Best of luck with the half tomorrow. I'm doing one too and never thought about taking gels. I might try a fistful of haribo around mile 8 though, if in dire straits.

I once took a gel that was a few months out of date without any negative consequences. I probably would not risk it in a race, though.

I think I'll leave it then. Haven't been taking them this year at all. Might just go with a few cola bottles.
    It's just a mental thing I suppose.

Took 5 during limerick marathon last week- all dated best before oct 11. No ill effects though I had taken some on long runs as I seemed to have loads around the house

"Best before" means it's ok to use it whenever. "Use by" is a bit more of a gamble.

You might miss out on some of the subte nuances in taste that you get from a fresh gel though.

I loved something I heard before "best before, not bad after". Water has a date on it. I wouldn't risk it for a race too even just for wrecking my head during the race.

I've used plenty of gone off gels (thats what happens when you buy in bulk:D) in races and never had a problem. That isnt to say that YOU WONT have a problem though. It could have an element of placebo about it - you think eating a gone off gel will make you sick, therefore it will make you sick. So if you're worried about it, dont do it.

    Thanks for help.
