VW Golf Airbag Light

    Hey guys,

So I've to get the NCT renewed on my MK5 06 Golf. However about a year ago my airbag warning light came on on the dash, brought it to my mechanic and he just plugged in his computer and it knocked it straight off so all was good.

Then a couple of weeks ago it came on again, brought it back to him and his computer wasn't able to erase the fault. So brought it to a different mechanic, and he couldn't erase it either. He said that when they're not able to erase it, it means there's a genuine fault and not actually a computer glitch.

He said I'd need to book the car in with him and let him go through it and see what the problem is to get it sorted.

My question is - will my mechanic be able to sort it out, and should I let him or would I be better off going to VW themselves, even though they'd probably charge me over the odds for it?

I need to get it sorted either way otherwise I'll fail the NCT on it so what's my best option?

    Cheers

Get quotes from each, common enough problem, i had the same problem!, not usually a big deal in fairness, your local guy should be able i fix it.

In the vast majority of cases the cause of an airbag warning light on a Golf 5 is a bad connection on the side airbag plugs on either of the front seats. No need to go to VW, any good independent should be able to sort you out.

Yes I've heard that it's quite often something simple like that. I think the fault was showing up on the passenger side airbag.

It seems odd that it just popped on for no reason one day, I wouldn't mind if the car had got a knock or I'd been messing with the electronics or something.

Hopefully my local should sort this out then without too much trouble

Anyone have any prices on what they've been charged for this before?
