What operating system is on it?
How many accounts are available on log on?
Can you access an admin account?

If you can log on with another account, check the services to ensure the group policy client service is set to automatic, it sounds like it isn't. Set it to automatic and reboot.

yeppydeppy, thanks, i have just looked at what you say and it is set to automatic, and through the new account anyway, will not let me in to change anything, if i try it asks for password and then the same message comes up, Thank you, John

Use another PC to download and burn hirens boot cd - as far as I remember this has a password reset utility.

Goto Start->Right Click on my computer->Manage->(User Control "Click Yes")management console opens->System Tools->Local Users and Groups->Users and right click on your original username/account and select reset password.

The account you do this under must be another administrators account.
This is used for account administration on a network but should work to change or update your password to log in to the original account.
