Out tomorrow, from the Canadian director of C.R.A.Z.Y. I've seen the ad a few times in the IFI (amusingly, without the French language clips of the above) and I'm really interested in checking it out. Get a Tree of Life vibe from the visuals, and from what I can gather thematically it's on relatively similar ground too (spirituality seems to be a major focus of the piece). Reviews are extremely positive. Might be a nice little surprise.

Really interesting to see that the UK/Ireland critics have reacted much more harshly to this than their transatlantic counterparts.

Went to see it today, and it's a bit of a mixed bag. The visuals, editing and music are for the most part fantastic and hypnotic. The dual narrative is handled well for the most part (the Paris 1969 one is much more rewarding, about a single-mother bringing up her Down Syndrome child). Alas it goes a bit off the wall in the last act, and despite some moments of poignancy it's also infuriating in its attempts to present some sort of spiritual and supernatural link between the two different stories. It's interesting to see how the two stories interact thematically (the two realities occasionally bleeding into each other through razorsharp editing), even if the modern-day storyline is over-serious.

That said, there was enough to impress to keep engaged for most of the running time. There is something dreamy about the whole thing. It's the attempts to explain the dream that can often be wholly frustrating, where the amateurish storytelling at odds with the technical wizardry.
