Which dress to choose?

I lived in Japan one year from April to November and the heat in the summer was unbearable!

Anyway, I prefer the first dress, I think it's prettier and it would definitely take you from day to night depending on accessories.

If you carry the weight on your hips, then the 2nd one is definatley not for you.

Have you looked at the new look website? They have a lovely choice there too for summer dresses.

I think both dresses are lovely but the 2nd one looks like it would be cooler for the warm weather you will get over there :)

I'm DREADING the summer - even my Japanese students who've lived here all their lives hate it.

Ahhh, conflicting opinions! May just have to get both ;) I agree that the second dress looks cooler and more flowy, I'm just worried that the pleating may make my bottom half look bigger than it is, as Silly mentioned. Although I love the colours. Decisions decisions. I'm just worried because I won't really have the option to return anything if I don't like it.

I'll have a look at that New Look website, I used to love browsing the shop but never even though about looking at them online. I've already seen some beautiful maxi dresses.

On the whole colour blocking trend, would this skirt http://www.awear.com/skirts/colour-block-aline-mini/invt/10785000green/ go well with a hot pink top, something like this http://www.awear.com/casual-tops/pink-ruched-sleeve-t-shirt/invt/10202471pink/

I'd pick the second one, it looks like the type of dress that could be worn both during the day and night. The first one looks a bit formal but that could just be me!

For me personally, i think its far too.....bold..
but if its the look you like, then go for it.
I really like the skirt, and the top is nice too, i just wouldnt put them together though..

Yea, I see what you mean. I'm getting over excited about it actually being warm (albeit too warm!) here for summer and looking forward to wearing lovely bright colours! They're both nice separates so I'll get them anyway, and I can decide if I like them together later.

Think I'll get this dress from New Look too http://www.newlook.com/shop/womens/dresses/mizumi-blue-tropical-maxi-dress_256903440

Thank God my friend travels light and can use my washing machine...or I'd be paying for an overweight suitcase!!

Japan does have import duties on clothes though, unfortunately :( I'm trying to research exactly how much it would be and it seems to vary between 5.3% and 12.8% of the value of the clothing. http://www.customs.go.jp/english/c-answer_e/imtsukan/1204_e.htm Plus they charge 5% consumption tax too.

A friend of mine in Tokyo got stung with an unexpected customs bill of about 100e, when she ordered clothes from an American online company. She did get shoes though which have huge duty rates if they're leather. Her experience has really put me off simply ordering online for delivery here! I will have to brave it at some point though. That's partly why I got so excited when my friend said he was coming! :D

Hi, I am same size as yourself and have tried on the 2nd one... totally did not suit my shape, as you said made me look alot bigger around the waist and hip area. The pic on website does the dress alot of favours too!! Hope this is of some help...

Thank you so much!! That was exactly the insight I was hoping for! I do prefer the colours and style of the second dress, but unfortunately I didn't think it would suit my shape, and seems I was right!

That's why I usually like to try things on, as pictures can be so deceiving! But unless I lose a bit of weight, my hips/boobs and a few inches off my height, I won't have many chances for that here (if I want to preserve my confidence!) Some places here have bigger sizes, but they're not too common, and often expensive.

I'd HAVE to agree with this poster. OP, I'm the same body size and type as you, it seems, and while the 2nd dress looks GORGEOUS in hte pictures, it looked các on. The elastic is too high up and it bunches under the boobies. Not attractive >.< I'd go for the 1st one over the 2nd one, personally. :D
