Different cars are best for different people. The more info you can give about your needs/wants/preferences, the better able people will be to help you. In the meantime, get out there and drive a good selection of cars you think might suit - you might be surprised at how much you learn.

Thanks for reply. We would want it for travelling around 140km on motorway 3 days a week and to hold buggy in boot along with isofix compatibility. Have 00 Nissan Almera petrol currently so looking for something similar in diesel. Was looking at 08/09 Nissan tiida. Anyone any thoughts on this car?

People will say no straight away to a Tiida but if you're not bothered by the questionable looks you are getting a well specced, low tax, modern car for small money.

I would check out the Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed as they will have some warranty remaining. That is if you were prepared to go for a hatchback or estate.

Plenty of Peugeot 308's 1.6 hdi around, or cheaper again the 1.6 fiat bravo, both good cars, the fiat multijet is a great engine.

Look for higher spec ones if you can find them wont cost more.

My sister has the 308 90 hp hdi and I wasn't overly impressed with the 50-55 mpg, my old 1.9 130hp passat tdi could do that. I'd look for a 6 speed 308. Still it's a good car and decent size.

The Prius is a great car for its size and I regularly get 4.5 l/100km or 62.77 mpg per tank and I highly recommend it. I love it. It does involve a bit of learning how to use the hybrid.

Thanks for your suggestions but I would definitely be going for a saloon.

Any thoughts on an Opel Vectra 1.9 diesel? 08/09?

OP, you would pick up a 08 Jetta on that budget:

1.9 TDi is old but robust and less complex than modern diesels.

Never had one or Drove one so I can't advise, but why the impracticality of a saloon?

I really don't like the Vectra, but That's me.

I'd certainly stay away from VW passats, that are a big pile of crap. The 09+ volkswagens are better quality but I would never again buy an 01-09 VW.

In fact I had an 02 punto back in 02 got it new and it gave me no problems, unlike volkswagens!

I would say that if you really want a saloon then the avensis Or accord would be good!

2001 Bora. Passat, Toledo were great cars! They are going out now but that's 10 years of high mileage.

Hey. If you are considering buying a Vectra, make sure the timing belt and water pump are done. Also have the flywheel checked. Both expensive fixes if they go wrong. We have one for two and a half years and have had to do both. They are a really nice car to drive and very economical.

Why do you say that saloons are impractical?

Why do you say that saloons are impractical?

Because access to the boot can be narrow making it more awkward getting the like of a buggy in there. A hatchback has a wider opening meaning it is more practical.

That's a good point - thanks. So what are the main differences between saloon and hatchback other than boot size?

Bootsize is probably nearly the same in both but access to it is easier with the hatchback as the rear parcel shelf lifts with the hatch boot whereas in the saloon it is stationary. Also nearly all hatchbacks have split folding rear seats, not all saloons have this feature.
