advice - part time studies and welfare?

    Hi everyone,

just need some advice here. Trying to finish college (PhD) but my grant will expire in a few months and I'll have no income then. I've been trying to find a part-time job, but to no avail so far.

So now I was wondering whether it would be possible to continue my studies part-time and try to get a supplementary welfare? Is that even possible? (I'm assuming I won't be eligible for JA as I'd still be in college even if part time)

Alternatively I'd have to drop out temporarily to do full-time work and then go back but I've been told that this is not advisable due to the risk of a) not returning or b) research not being up-to-date anymore.

    Anyone any suggestions?

just wondering how did you get on. I have a similar question....

I was offered to study for a PhD, was unsuccessful in getting funding and currently on JA. Went to SW office and I explained my situation and they said that I just go on casual jobseeker's and tick on dockets that days that I am in uni (due to it being unstructured and roughly 10 hours). Hopefully will get some teaching work once doing it so wont need the JA at all.

What I am asking is does this sound right to you. I don't want to get shafted later on, due to the person is the SW office making a mistake..

Maybe check with citizens advice as well.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
