Everton's Royston Drenthe says Lionel Messi repeatedly referred to him as 'negro

Royston Drenthe joined Premier League side Everton on a season long loan at the end of last August from his parent club Real Madrid. The Dutchman had been edged out at the La Liga Champions and moved to Merseyside after another loan move to Hercules.

Whilst with Real Madrid he came up against Barcelona more than once and Drenthe isn't happy with the way players from the Catalan club referred to him, singling out Lionel Messi for criticism. It's not often Messi is criticised, especially over something as serious as this, and as such it's bound to make big news.

Drenthe was speaking to NuSport, and is already quoted by AS in Spain, his criticisms show a difference in culture and appraoch to racial issues "I played a lot against Messi in recent years and we always had problems. You know what bothered me most? The way he talked, always called me 'negro, negro,'"

"I understand that it is common in South America, but I can not stand it, Mahamadou Diarra, my teammate at Real Madrid, got angry when Higuain and Heinze (Real Madrid team mates) spoke to him that way. So in the end they stopped."

The last time Drenthe came up against Messi was for Hercules and he had the same issues he'd experienced before "When the Hercules won in Barcelona I had a little incident with him. Before the match, shook my hand and said 'hello, negro' a few times. After the game he did not greet me."

Drenthe also talked about his future and said he could be moving back to Holland "I want to again do what I like and that's football, in addition, Rotterdam is my city, Feyenoord has not called me yet, but of course I would not mind. Maybe I'll call them myself."

If true, will this get as much coverage as the other racism incident that we had this season? Will Messi get all the negative press like Suarez got?

There's a youtube clip of Messi running rings around Drenthe. Royston never got close enough to him to hear what Messi was saying.

Also, title should be former Everton player, Moyes sent him packing before the FA Cup semi final. Jose won't be taking him back at Madrid either. The lads a talented player but has shown that he's also a clown.

    Oh goody.

A scandal involving the figurehead of the most po-faced, sanctimonous football club in the world.

I think if I wanted to insult Royston Drenthe on the pitch I'd just keep calling him "Royston".

If one manager can not tolerate muppets it Moyes, he was given a chance and screwed up.

his own loss, he could have had a good spell at Everton too

Lionel is not bound by the normal rules that govern mortals.

Did I mention that he once completed 2578 passes in a game and his free kicks regularly achieve a velocity exceeding 120 miles per hour?

Typical of the kinda stuff about him that just gets swept under the carpet. If another player in spain had these kinds of accusations made about him the forum would explode with the indignation.

What about Biscuits calling Marcelo a monkey? Racism isn't a big issue in La Liga obviously.

As has been stated above, I'd take this with a pinch of salt. Drenthe has bags of ability but he's quite petulant.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Drenthe is a negro, no? Is it that he is ashamed to be, that it offends him?

Naturally, if it is true, it boils down to intent. But I wouldn't be offended to be called caucasian.

I think it is more a case of like with like punishment. This would be the same case as Suarez was cited in this season, for which he was handed a ban and a fine. If I was a Liverpool fan, and this is proven to have happened, and nothing is done about it, I would feel more than a little pi$$ed off.

Round up a gang and blindly defend Messi, get some tshirts made and do a character assassination on Drenthe.
Make a few statements about imaginary previous incidents involving Drenthe too.

Pm me when you're done and I'll give you a good arguing ;)

Oh yea and as the title says "repeatedly" I presume you will be making a big deal of that word and will be solely concentrating on it and expecting video evidence on the exact number of times.
It will obviously prove Drenthe a liar if he doesn't have evidence for each time :D

Firstly, he did not call him "a negro", he called him "negro", the Spanish word for black.

It is, as you say, about intent. And if I was in a bar, house, shop, football game... and there was some guy calling a black guy "black" in place of his name, I can't see how that would have anything other than bad intentions.

Such a predictable post. Not just yours but the others wondering why there's not as much interest.
It's not surprising at all because there isn't hundreds-thousands of Everton,Barcelona and Real Madrid fans on here.
Do you not see a difference??
What is it you don't get??

If it was said in a derogatory way or if he knew Drenthe was uncomfortable with it then he should be punished.
Using race to wind someone up should be out of the question no matter what level, league or country you are in.

I think he's making the point that the many of the people who condemn/deny racism in other threads are actually more concerned with point-scoring for their clubs than in the actual social issue of racism. It'd be unfortunate if that were the case.

I understand that and it's why I said not just his post.
The fact he said faux-outrage suggests he thinks it was all point-scoring.

I posted a lot in that thread as it concerned a player from the team I support and their biggest rival in terms of fans.
My feelings on the issue of racism would be the same no matter what players are involved but my interest in this is understandably significantly less.

Call me daft but isn't it the very nature of a fan to have biased feelings towards their own club and rivals? I mean if we are to discuss the social problems we may as well be clear about our stance to begin with?

It's like this (for me a Barcelona fan)
Messi may very well have said some thing hurtful to poor Royston. If he is found guilty, I will condemn him just as any person with any sort of moral footing would do. How ever, given the claims them self, and the "victim" in this case. I find that it's probably going to be nothing more that a crock of BS from a player who doesn't understand his profession. Playing football, not the clowning around you'd come to expect from Drenthe and other players.

That I think is the general sentiment here I imagine and would also be the reason there's not 1,000,000 pages here already.

I found this part mildly interesting:
"I understand that it is very common in South America, but we cannot stand it. Mahamadou Diarra, my teammate at Real, would become furious when Gabriel Heinze and Gonzalo Higuain initially called him 'negro'. But they soon stopped.

If the label is really that common in South America, I wonder if we'll be seeing more racism cases in the next few years?

ah but Messi has been living in Spain for about 14 or 15 years and should know this by now and not use it. There should be no need to differentiate people based on their skin colour. If as the claim goes it's a term of endearment then how come it only seems to be the black players who get referred to as it?

There you are folks, textbook blaming the victim. Apparently it doesnt matter that Drenthe was racially abused, because he is a bit of a tit. The same people will tell a rape victim that it doesn't matter that she was raped because she was a bit of a slut.

One thing has nothing to do with the other.

Well, I found it interesting that Diarra's own teammates called him negro. That would maybe suggest that it isn't necessarily an offensive term. Heinze had been in Europe for a good few years at that point too so you'd imagine he'd have known that it could be offensive. Maybe they just didn't like Diarra :p

I love Messi but I wouldn't defend him on this if he did say it. The report in the OP is a bit abridged from other reports of this story:
"We played against each other a lot, and we always had problems. You know what really bothers me? That tone with which he always called me 'negro, negro'," Drenthe stated in an interview with Dutch magazine Helden.

Makes it slightly clearer that Drenthe isn't necesarily saying that the term itself is the problem, rather the way it's used.

    (took that quote from here

Wonder did he inform the relevant authorities at the time, whenever it happened ? Not sure why its being mentioned in the same breathe as other recent high profile cases.

If you have a complaint make it. Don't just go badmouthing to the media and not backing up your claim officially.
    Drenthe was speaking to NuSport.............
