Volvo S40 - Reduced Engine Performance

Hi, I have a volvo S40 SE Model. For the last few months, I have getting an error message that there is reduced enging performance when I am driving and the car goes into "limp" mode.

Usually when I turn it off and on again it is fine. Sometimes the enging also revs up when I am slowing down and going to stop.

I have replaced the throttle body housing and also the throttle body sensor at the top of the accelerator but the problem is still happening.

I have had a diagnostics completed a few times now and the same errors are occurring.

Would you have any idea what the probem is ? I cannot seem to find a mechanic that can.
    Thanks

Hi, Did you ever get that fixed? Having what sounds like the same problem myself. Do you know what errors were coming up on yours? My engine was giving the errors p1225 and p0220. Is it the GDI engine? I was looking for a throttle position sensor myself, but couldn't find one.

What engine? Petrol or diesel? Do we know what fault code are showing, exactly? It sounds a little like lean-running, possibly due to an air leak. Give it a rev at idle, when it's nicely warmed up, and watch how the tachometer needle settles back to idle. If it hangs around above idle for a few seconds and takes its time settling back to normal idle speed (about 8/900 RPM, ish) that's indicative of an overly-lean mixture.

I have the same prob. Fitted second hand throttle body and still have problem. Garage is proposing to fit a 'damper' to the throttle body. ? Did you ever get to the bottom of your prob ?
    Thanks

Sold it 2 weeks ago. Never tried fixing it. I assume you changed the sensor with the throttle body? One error was P0220 and I forget the other one.
I learnt to drive with it without the problem happening too much. There was a point on the accelerator when it was barely pressed that triggered the fault. My mechanic suggested it possibly being a fault with a something around the accelerator, but he hadn't even looked at it.

Mechanic changed throttle body so I assume sensor changed. I will ask tomorrow . He is going to file the 'butter fly' in the throttle body as I was told that it can stick by a Volvo mechanic
Fingers crossed. Pedal was changed as well previously. It's a real pain .

I eventually got this sorted. Only for the polish lad that has been mentioned on the boards I don't think anyone would have had the patience or ability to solve it. :)

Hi gjb, can you post what you did to fix this issue as I have a similar problem now. Thanks

The mechanic changed the air manifold and this resolved the problem on mine. He found this was the problem by spraying WD40 at the manifold and it 'raced' every time he did, a small piece in the manifold was defective.

Thats perfect thanks, I really had no idea where to start looking into the problem. Do you know if that mechanic is still about, if so could you PM me his details, thanks

An accelerator pedal, secondhand throttle body, new throttle body, on the diagnostics computer numerous times, 3 months of volvo garage and mechanics looking at it and circa €600 later no one could tell me what it was at the time. Only the mechanic I went to in the end had the patience to solve the problem
