Doubting my experience level for Interview

    Hi,

This might seem ridiculous, but i was invited for interview for a great job and I'm questioning why i was offered the interview.

From my CV & cover letter, do the employers deduce whether or not i have sufficient qualifications & experience for the job?

I feel i may not have enough experience?

At this stage, i'm applying for tons of jobs, some i'm over qualified for & some where i may not have enough experience, but chancing my arm anyway...

Surely the employer would assess from my CV whether or not i am experienced enough? And surely someone with not enough qualifications or experience wouldn't get an interview?

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this... am i just being negative? :o

    Many Thanks.

i am currently sitting in a pub in manchester after having a paid for interview by a company which i applied for on a chance. they were looking for 4-5 years exp. i have 1. but the 1 i have was a very very impressive 1 and they know this. i think i may well get this job and will see about moving.

things like exp on a job specx are just a guideline. look more at what the role entails and what they are looking for in person terms. if you match this then do not let exp get you down as it is a guide. bill gates made microsoft with little exp and so did marc zuckerberg, with book face obviously.

just go for it, they will not waste both your time and theirs by interviewing you if you didnt have something they were looking for.

    thanks,

You are absolutely correct: the employer wouldn't waste their time interviewing you if you didn't have enough "attractiveness" (experience, quals, contact, smarts, whatever) to make you a credible candidate.

The ideal profile in their ad/JD etc may not match what they really expect to hire.

To put it bluntly, get over yourself, and get busy preparing for the interview.

Thank you both so much for your replies.

I am determined to do the very best i can at this interview and have started my preparations.

I suppose i was looking for excuses as to why i wouldn't get the job, before i even gave myself a chance to compete for it. :o

Sincere thanks, i feel like i have has good a chance as anyone now.

Sorry to ask this question, but...

Is the interview with a recruitment agency?

    Did you get the job?

don't freak yourself out worrying about this. Go in there and give it your all, as you say they may well have enough experience in their field to be able to spot someone with potential.
You may not have all the experience, but they might have seen something there that gives them an interest in you.
    You have nothing to lose.

I am now working in a role which I too thought I had no hope of getting. But a colleague of mine at the time saw the job and told me to go for it, to which my response what 'yeah right'! She insisted I apply, because she had every faith I could do it and I wasn't believing in myself enough. I would never have applied myself, as I didn't think I would have a snowballs chance, but she insisted that I was well able for the job even if I didn't think it myself. Her confidence in me gave me a boost and since I was being made redundant I decided to throw caution to the wind and send off my CV.

I was amazed to get called for interview. Just that alone boosted my confidence. I was further amazed to get a second interview. After each interview I came out thinking, well I doubt I'll get it, but I held my own and I'm proud of that, and I must be impressing someone to get an interview/second interview etc. Each success made me feel more confident, but I never imagined I would be successful in actually getting the job. Low and behold, here I am 8 mths later in a job which is several steps up from the one I was made redundant from, on a better salary than I've ever had, and I love the work. My manager told me that she particularly wanted me because although I didn't have a specific qualification, she could see that I had other great experience and attributes, and what I don't have she felt I would easily pick up.

something in you told you that you had something to offer this company, otherwise you wouldn't have even applied, right? something about the J/d made you think 'I could do this', right? well the company also thought that, so feed off that fact, focus on what you can do and the experience you do have, and go in there and give it socks. Sell yourself like you are the bees knees! I know it sounds twee, but if you don't believe in yourself, who will?

Whats the worst that can happen?

best of luck to you and I hope it all goes well.

just to add, sometimes when you are feeling rejected on aregular basis, as is norm the current jobs climate, you can often forget just how valuable and attractive an employee you are. You forget your own worth. That is how I was feeling when I heard I was being made redundant, and when I look back at the reservations I had at applying for my job, at lot of it was me literally forgetting just how much I have to offer. My colleague was great at reminding me of this, and it was the push I needed to apply.

As she wisely told me - if you don't know your own worth, no one else will either.
I feel i may not have enough experience?

Thanks Little Ted for your encouragement.

These replies have given me a confidence boost and i am revising and researching in preparation.

I'm determined to do my very best, i'm focusing on what i have to offer them, and the benefit i would be to their company!

My interview is not until next Tuesday, so i have plenty of time to psyche myself up.

Thanks again everyone, i can't tell you how much more positive i feel about it.
