Brake Problems with 01 Almera

I have looked through a few threads on this and it seems to be a very common problem/fault with the Almeras. I had pads changed not too long ago but now I am getting a lot of squeaking in one of the wheels. This had been happening since I got it serviced a few months back. It was only noticeable when it wasn't raining. It looks like the caliper is at fault and not releasing the brake pads properly. Huge amount of heat coming from there and a burnt smell.
In general I have found the brakes on the almera to be v poor. She doesn't handle great compared to my old car and generally the brakes lock up and she slides along the road. I am also finding that the power steering is now giving issues. I believe this is due to the problems with the wheel as before I had similar issues when I got a puncture and used the small mickey mouse wheel.
My back brakes are also not biting and the car is v strange as a result and probably dangerous. Handbrake needs to be tightened as well.
Off to the garage she goes anyway.
Can anyone tell me what the charge would be for discs, brakes and a caliper?

    Thanks

Is this happening on the front or rear?

The skidding along the road would be much more likely to be to do with tyres rather then brakes.

I would be difficult to gauge what the exact problem would be without having the brakes inspected but sticking calipers would be common on the Almera.
