Sorry if this is in the wrong place. Posting from my phone so am limited a bit...

Trying to turn my laptop on at the moment and having trouble. At the stage where it should go to desktop, I just get a black screen. Still have my mousr but nothing else. Control-alt-delete just brings up a message saying "logon process unable to display security and log on options...if systembdoesnt respons press esc or restart using the power switch".

    Need help :( Any ideas?

You will need your recovery disc that came with laptop. In the bios, change boot order to boot from disc first. Follow instructions from there. Good luck

I saw this at one point on Vista, on some ropey laptops around where I work, the IT guys had to wipe and reinstall windows, from what I recall they couldn't retrieve the data either.

    Yeap.

*sigh* was afraid some one would say about the disks. Will have to find them first...

Start the machine and keep tapping F8 until you get a menu.

Do you get the option for Repair Your Computer? If you do, you might not need the discs and have the option to do a Factory Restore.
