Vincent Kompany - How good is he?

Obviously I'm incredibly biased but for me has to be one of the top centre halves in the world right now. Inspirational leader, comes across very well in interviews, and has all the attributes of the complete defender. And he's only just gone 26.

I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of anyone who DOESN'T like him.

Also, at a cost of just £6 million he's one of the biggest bargains of the last few years and it's good to see a Champ Manager legend come good :D

    This video is superb -

I agree. Him and Vidic are the best defenders in the league by a mile. Maybe the best defenders in the world atm

Vidic gets included alot, but he has been absent for the past 18 months or so. When fit, it is hard to argue a better CB in the Premiership, other than Kompany, than Vidic. However I think he is a few slots down on the worlds best.

Thiago Silva & Mats Hummels would edge him out I think, but mainly due to the fact that they haven't been out of the game for the stretch Vidic has.

That said however, I think Kompany sits on top as the best CB in the world atm due to his leadership traits that he has shone at this season in particular.

Can't forget his passing efforts that would make Silva proud either!

Vidic doesnt even come close and even when he was playing this season didnt seem up to much. To me, Vidic is just Utd's John Terry, over-hyped and full of his own self importance.

Kompany on the other hand has an excellent reading of the game and seems to always make the right tackle and the right time. Pity he's at City but you cant win them all ;)

Ah no way. Vidic is immense. Think if he wasnt injured this season UTD would have won the league.

That 'self importance' is attributed to Vidic by you, because he is a Manchester United player. Vidic and Kompany are both excellent, and on par with each other. Although Kopmany will now need to have another top season to remain so.

I actually disagree with you about his passing, his passing this season has been poor at times and his long useless punts up field have drove me mad on occasions. I do believe he is one of the best defenders around though. But then again i believe Lescott to have had a better season for him, especially pre xmas.

Seriously. Silva, Kompany and possibly Hummels in that order.

excellent player and City would not been about to win the league without him which is a huge compliment for any player in a squad that cost so much to assemble.

Incredible CB, no doubt about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,017 ✭✭✭Leslie91

Vidic is your traditonal type centre half, tough as nails, wins everything in the air but can be turned by smaller quicker strikers. Kompany can handle the smaller quicker guys much better and is more than capable at winning headers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Hes defiently the best in the league at the moment.

Vidic, JT, Vermalen, all in and around similar levels but Kompany this year has been head and shoulders above the rest.

Thiago Silva is still the best on the planet though.

Nothing to do with who he plays for. I ate in the same restaurant as him and he insulted each and every one of my Utd supporting mates for having the audacity to smile in his direction and give him a thumbs up. Most if not all other players I've been around wouldve respected their fans. It's not like they were over harrassing him for pics or autographs or anything. Michael Carrick on the otherhand was a gent..but thats off topic.

Just watching Vidic for the last few years and he isnt all that. He wasnt even as good as Hyppia was in his prime and he's not as good as Kompany now. I cant think of many central defenders who had as good a season as Kompany. My one criticism was that he didnt score enough but that changed this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,828 ✭✭✭bullvine

Kompany is on his way to being the worlds best if not already there, probably with Thiago Silva. The Vidic bashing is laughable! Nonsense talk of him being out of the game for 18 months??? he had an outstanding 2010-2011 season. United have missed him badly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,781 ✭✭✭clappyhappy

Not a Man City supporter, but I really like Kompany, think he is a great player and as said comes across as a nice guy. He has been outstanding for City the past few months, lets hope he can continue his form and help City to win the league.

Jesus, Hyypia again. Why do some Liverpool fans keep bringing him up in discussions about great CBs? He was nothing more than good, the players he is compared to are world class.

Jonn Terry is in that category as well.

Vidic for me is still a ways clear of those two. He has been injured so over the last season its deffo Terry and Kompany as the two best in the league.

Kompany has still has age on his side though and can bridge that gap and become the best in the league and maybe even the world. Lets just see him repeat that form for another season before we get completely carried way.

I'd say he's the second best in the world after Thiago Silva.

Vermaelen is really over rated defensively. Not close to the same bracket as Vidic or JT defensively.

It's amazing what a few goals will do for you if you're a centre half.

    Kompany is brilliant.

On a different note Yaya Toure has been the stand out player this season. Those two in particular are the reason City got back on top. If City go on and lift the title I can see them dominating European football for the next few years and it's those two that are at the heart of their team.

Vidic not as good as Hyypia? Even the most bias of Liverpool fans will surely have a chuckle at that.

You seem to have a dislike of him for matters unrelated to football and therefore he is "overhyped" etc.

Perhaps some day you'll be able to judge him solely for his ability on the pitch like the the rest of us.

Vidic & Kompany are miles ahead of any other defender in England/Spain. Thiago Silva is supposed to be exceptional, but I didn't watch enough Serie A in the last few years to comment. No point judging him on the odd CL game here and there.

United fan but find it impossible to dislike the guy

Carries himself superbly. Great leader and always acts professionally. A great role model for anyone watching.

Easily the best defender in the league this year and deserves to lift the title this year

He isnt. Hyypia was never pacy but read the game well. Vidic has an ok reading of the game but relies on his size and brute force to get him out of trouble a lot. That's great as long as it works, but up against strong, pacy attackers he has been found out on numerous occasions. If there is any element of trickery to the attackers game, Vidic ends up fouling them and often at dire consequences. That never happened with Hyypia. Not saying the latter is world class. I'm just saying I'd pick him over Vidic any day. But Kompany trumps them both by a long long way.

Kompany as a player is excellent, as a leader he reminds me Roy Keane, that is pretty much the highest compliment I can pay him.

The only City player I can genuinely say I will have a very very small small on my face for when I see him lift the Premier League trophy, couldn't begrudge him it at all.

Disagree with Yaya, when on form he is a beast, but he has not had the same level of consistency this season as Kompany, the team really really suffered without Kompany, it got by without Yaya. This is not to say I don't rate him highly btw. But I do think Kompanys influence on that team is far beyond anybody elses

Big Kompany fan but Thiago Silva is easily the best in the world imo. The guy has absolutely everything, phenomenal positioning, pace, tackling, aerial ability. He's unbelievable on the ball too, composure when needed, and his passing stats are pretty special for a centre back, often doubles as a deep lying playmaker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭meriwether

    He's really good.

Himself and Vidic are the best (when Viodic is fit).

Lescott, Koscielney and perhaps Skrtyl/Agger come in behind.

Kompany is the most likeable of the City players and probably their most important. For what he does, himself and Tevez should be swapping wages!

Definitely world class and now just needs to perform to the same level for the next number of years. I'd have him and Vidic as the only two world class center halfs in the Premiership.

Over the Manimal Micah Richards? I think Micah is the most likeable by talking to opposition fans.

Kompany is a beast if he was out for the season like Vidic couldnt see City winning the league. He is only 26 and already so good. Best defender in the league.

On Vidic he is on par with Kompany and is so important you can see how much he is missed. He is an exceptional leader and if he was fit United would have won the league imo. Amazing a player gets injured and some people seem to forget how good you are.

Funny that Arsenal conceeded a record number of premier league goals for the club and people are still touting their centre backs as level with Vidic and Kompany. Arsenal also have the highest possesion per game average in the Prem so they haven't even as much defending to do as most others.

What now? Have a read of the thread there again son, you'll find it was a Chelsea fan proposing Vermaelen as being one of the best in the league with 3 Arsenal fans subsequently posting that he wasn't.

I think Koscielny was mentioned once, and while he's not yet in the same league as Kompany or Vidic, he's been a standout performer for the club this season. And you know having 13 different back four combinations over the course of the season doesn't lend itself to solidarity either.

? I never singles out Arsenal fans at all, just amazed that some people could even propose these as comparably as good to Kompany and Vidic.

That logic is a bit infantile.

There are other factors which can lead to teams conceding goals that the CB's.

If you put Kompany and Vidic as a CB pairing, surrounded them with 9 Dagenham and Redbridge players (no offence D&R) and sent them out against Real Madrid, they'd lose 11-0.

That doesn't mean Kompany and Vidic are bad CB's, despite having conceded a record number of goals in a (hypothetical) Champs league tie.

This is old news. Championship Manager predicted this back in '05:

    Tackling: 20
    Positioning: 20
    Heading: 20
    Marking: 20
    Jumping: 20

    The complete package.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,224 ✭✭✭✭Marty McFly

Kompany is a class above the majority of his Man City team mates in humility and is a model proffessional. Then add that with the talent and performances hes put in this year he has to be up there with the best without doubt.

But Vidic in the past yes ive always been a fan of his but hes barely played a game this year, hes now a year older and suffered and serious injury he can hardly be mentioned as the best cbs in the world considering that? Next year maybe but right now no.

As for those mentioning Vermaelen no chance really hes been poor this year could have been having to shift position so much or injurys have caught up on him im hoping hell be back to his best next year well see. But Koscielny has been outstanding yes Arsenal have conceded a lot of goals this year but without him it would have been a hell of a lot worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,825 ✭✭✭Mikeyt086

Vincent Kompany is absolutely brilliant. Himself and Nemanja Vidic are the two best in the World. I don't know how you could argue with that, unless out of spite, or just for the sake of an argument.

Could you imagine Kompany and Vidic as a partnership? Jesus christ.

Unfortunately for them, neither are a patch on Richard Dunne in a greey jersey. :)
