    Howdy,
As most of you guys know, i got an audi a4 2.0 tdi s line a couple of months ago. When i was buying it that was basically exactly what i wanted, I love how it looks and the comfort etc. Was doing lots of long journeys at the time and it made sense. Now i do sweet fcuk all miles, Mostly a few 5 mile journeys a day, basically nothing. I've had the car 2 months or that and its been in the garage 4 times already (Only small things, but still very annoying) Ive had it remapped too and it was going really well but im noticing now its feeling sluggish and just not as nice to drive. I know this could be simply a bit of carbon in the egr valve or something simple but im just starting to feel like selling it before anything serious goes wrong. I was thinking with my low mileage now about getting a Golf GTI. But either way ill be kind of gutted if that makes sense because I love my car, its just all the niggles are ruining it for me. What do you guys think?? And by the way sorry for the long rambling post, probably repeated myself a lot :o
    Thanks lads, any advice appreciated

Can you expand on why it has been to the mechanics four times?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,626 ✭✭✭✭vectra

I am sure your car would sell easily enough.
Get rid of it if you are feeling like that and buy something like an Octavia vR Petrol. That should put a smile on your face.

How long do you expect this to be the case?

Yes, I've had brake discs replaced, then brake callipers, then wheel bearing and now I have a squeaking and grating noise back in the front left passenger side. And the car is alot more sluggish sometimes, other times its ok but it's mostly sluggish now

At least until September, i was on four different badminton teams this season which meant travelling between 60-120 mile trips several times a week. But next September I won't be on as many so maybe one trip a week or two

Might be the remap effecting something or other, I'd get that diagnosed anyway.

You'll sell it on privately easily enough and iirc you bought it for a reasonable sum.

The discs and calipers are more maintenance, aren't they? I wouldn't prejudice a car for that.

Have you had the noise checked out ?

No car is above needing some work done to it.... Shifting this and getting something else doesn't mean you wont be inheriting somebody else s problems down the line.

Ya maybe it is, ill be gettin my mechanic to have a look and if he can't find anything I'll give joe power a call. Ya i got it at a decent price so hopefully wouldn't be losing money

Yes your totally correct, im not saying im getting rid just because of that, it's just atm he niggles are driving me crazy and giving me a bad feeling about the car. It's the possibility of the infamous balance shaft/oil pump failure that's so common with the BLB engines that's always in the back of my mind too... The more I think about it, it seems a bit like a gamble keeping it. I'm thinking maybe I should spend an extra few pounds now and change, rather than possibly having to fork out a couple of grand just to fix it in the future? God im so confused!

I remember you now. You had that thread the day you bought the car worried about the 2.0 and it's inherent problems.

OP, have the car checked out good and proper and get a professional opinion and make your mind up from there. If you're in Dublin, there's a good Boardsie that I and most other folk would have no issues recommending.

Ya that's a good idea thanks, I'm in wexford but don't mind travelling for the right guy to check it out. I think I know who your talking about but could you pm me details anyway?
    Thank you :)

It would be much the same but a far more interesting drive tbh. The N11 is a very boring road. Is that George your talking about??

Been looking up the golf gti's a bit there, there really starting to look look attractive tbh... How are they reliability wise?? Any common faults etc? That DSG box looks amazing.

it seems to be a thing with people thinking the tdi is sluggish. I personelly thought the same so got it remapped but got it done cheap and ended up havin to get it done again lol. my dads s line is chipped and is the tdi and is a cracker of a car and even after the re mapping mine his felt like it had alot more go in it. as for the work done its all work any car would need so i wouldnt sell it based on that alone all cars need a bot of tlc :P

I'm not saying it's sluggish permanently, its just after becoming sluggish man! When it's running well its not one bit sluggish tbh! Had it remapped to around 180 bhp and just under 300ft/lbs of torque so it moves! And yes I know it's maintenance, but for some reason I just have this sinking feeling about it now, i cant really explain it well sorry. But I know I'm not enjoying it nearly enough for a recently bought car because of that and the fear of a big issue and repair bill coming my way!

well i can understand that i hate having to spend money on my car and wish someoone invented parts that never broke or needed replacing lol. It can put a bit of a bummer on the car taking some of the goodness out of it. but you could sell it and get another car and have a huge problem there to. id say get the noise cheeked out and price whatever job it is. if its more than what u want sell it but you never know it could just be a simple bearing or ball joint. is it when the car is driving or turning?

Ya i know your 100% right, I will get it checked out and go from there. I doubt it's anything major except majorly annoying.... It literally sounds like a bird tweeting loudly in the wheel arch up to 40mph or that, and then when I brake its a horrible grinding/grating noise. I had this issue a while back and brought it back under warranty, they got rid for a couple of weeks but now it's back. I'm fairly sure it's there even when I'm turning, but ill check in the morning and post here :)

Having the egr taken out & cleaned wont cost a whole lot, only an hour of two labour, worth having done to start anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 kyle123

if it gets worse with braking and its only on that side id say its almost a safe bet its something to do with the brakes. could just be the pad rubbing off the disk. if it was them disks that were replaced at the same time it would be a clear problem because one disk would be worn down or have more of a groove in it than the other. but im no expert on audis so id get it checked out professionally anyway.

Good stuff, already have his number, had him have a quick look at it in bray when i got it. Very nice guy :)
Im going to get the little things sorted on it this week and I think I'm going to shift it then. I'd love a Golf GTI but just a little worried about the economy.
Any recommendations for something around 8k that is good to drive, powerful enough and wont be too thirsty on fuel?? I know im not going to get a car as economical as the audi but the way i look at it is i'll be paying a little extra at the pumps for the horrible feeling of impending doom to be gone :o

Would you consider a vRS Octy petrol? They feel a bit roomier than a Golf ( I know it is basically the same car )

Driven easy up to 40mpg is apparently achievable.
Average I would guess 32 ish.

You never know. Seller may strike a deal for your diesel.?

Ya thats a nice looking car. How do they drive/handle vectra??
I cant help but be drawn to the golf at the minute though.

Have a GTI for 2 years now.

    In that time:
Wishbone bushes €100 odd. Need those on any car.
Aircon Compressor went - known issue on VAGs of that eera €450 with goodwill from VW €1000 without.
Diverter valve and PCV valve replaced - about €200
Intake flapper motor is gone now, about €100 to replace with a used part or €300 with new.

They have a DMF so listen for any knocking but it doesn't seem to give too many problems and if your going DSG make sure it was serviced as it should have been.

Not too bad in 2 years but it's not trouble free either. All these issues are very very common on 2006/7 GTIs. Other than that it's a great car.

I am happy with the handling as I do not trash it round the back roads.
Then again the petrol would be lighter at the front than the diesel so probably different as well
Couple of easy enough mods can improve them greatly.

    Aircon compressor about 90k km
DV valve and PCV were knackered when I got it at 70k ish
Wishbone bushes the same 70k ish
Intake flap motor has been throwing a code the odd time over the past year. There is 110k km on it now.

Make sure you test drive both the DSG and Manual. A lot of people don't like the DSG, and it can take some getting used to before it really starts to shine.

A couple of notes, it has an aftermarket head unit instead of the VW RNS one, a lot of these are cheap chinese units that are pretty crappy, so give it a good going over unless you plan to replace it.

The stock air intake has also been replaced, so I would imagine there are other mods as well that you would want to get all the info on. I don't see any mention of a service history in the description. The DSG gearbox needs (NEEDS!) the oil changed in it at set intervals, and given that they have modded the car, I would expect it's been driven pretty hard, so unless it's definitely had the DSG serviced properly, I wouldn't touch it tbh.

    Thanks for that input,
I dont want one thats been modded at all.
Would i better looking at some in garages then and trading in my own car as there shouldnt be much of a price difference?
Would save the hassle of selling mine and would probably get a warranty?
The only thing thats niggling me is its going to cost alot more to run!
