For years I've been told I need to build up the strength in my back. I do Pilates but was looking to try something new.

Has anyone tried hula hooping and if so could you recommend a good DVD preferably one with music

Won't work, will probably make it worse!

    Did you try it?

I thought it would make it worse too. But there's loads online supporting it.

I know the Internet could tell you sky diving is great for your back!!! But that's why I was wondering if anyone tried it.

These days my back is fairly poor and the doc says I have a bulging disk so the last thing I want is to injure it!

Go to a physiotherapist and they'll advise you on correct exercises for your back complaint.

Yeah my physio says to do Pilates. I never asked him about doing the hula hoop.
Will ask next time I visit him if he knows anything about hula hoop aerobics but was just wondering if anyone had ever tried it. You can't beat first hand experience!!

Well, I haven't come across any papers on low back pain and hula hooping! That's a lot of rotational force and depending on what mechanism is causing the back pain, it could make it worse.

Hold off on doing it until you speak with your Physio.

I'm kind of surprised your physio just told you to to Pilates instead of giving you a specific set of exercises.

Oh no sorry he gave me some stretches and excercies aswell! And he advised me to go to his Pilates class as well. He runs with with two other physios. I've moved a bit away from that area so can't attend that class any more which I found great so now I go to a once weekly stott Pilates class but find once a week no where near enough

I'll hold off so. Thanks Lorraine

What about swimming? I get a very stiff back (specific compensatory issue due to an old orthopediac problem), and I find the pool great, not just the swim itself, but it allows you to stretch in ways that you just cant do on land.

There are also some great core exercises to do in the pool - just walking the pool is good for the core but you can also use the foam noodles etc to do specific exercises.

Its an alternative to pilates - which I absolutely hated! And a jacuzzi afterwards can help with tight sore muscles too.

Id definitely stay away from hula hooping tbh.

That's a great idea. I'd totally forgotten about swimming which I did for a term and loved. Can't remember why I stopped! I think I got lazy and hated leaving the pool with soaking hair on the dark evenings. Will definitely look into it!
