    Hi,
I graduated with a 2:1 in Modern History from Queens University in 2009.Since then I have worked in a supermarket to save money for travelling which I have now done.I live up north and there are very few opportunities for graduates here at the moment.I know the situation in the south is very bleak also. But are there jobs for graduates in Dublin?I'm really not that fussy about what sector I work in and I'm not expecting to walk into a great,well-paying position.I'd just like the opportunity to go into an entry level position, work hard and hopefully work my way up an organisation.Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

There are jobs but it is very competitive
In my opinion you will struggle with a Modern History degree to source anything worthwhile.
Is there an opportunity to go back to college ?

    Mark,

There are opportunities, you just have to look around. Having a 2:1 degree helps your case.

I'm not sure if you can apply to graduate programmes this time round, as you graduated in 09 Perhaps this is a reason to go back to education for a year. (application runs from August/September to this time next year approx). However, I would perhaps email the companies that offer them and ask if you're eligible (take a look on Gradireland and find contact details through websites)

Another option would be to go into the much-maligned in these boards recruitment industry, where you often do not need a specific qualification to enter into entry level roles. However, be warned that this is a stressful, sales type sector, and as you can tell from this site, endures a lot of acrimony.

The other place to look is Linkedin. I presume you have a profile already, if not get one and take a look around groups that you are interested in. Contribute any knowledge you have in the relevant places, and explore other areas you may not have much knowledge about. There are a lot of opportunities on there, although for your background a lot of them will be non specific sales/recruitment type work. Nothing to stick the nose at up though obviously.

I came across an opportunity a couple of days ago, in Dublin for a short term gig, office based in the HR sector. PM me if you want to get the details.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for the response Bandana boy.Yes,going back to do a masters is something which I'm certainly considering.I had always thought that I would end up doing teaching but it is not something I really feel I want to do now.I've thought about a postgrad in marketing

It sounds to me like you need to figure out what you want to actually do: "jobs for graduates" is incredibly broad, and pretty much meaningless.

How long have you been in retail - have you considered getting into retail management? If not, then consider why before you spend more time/money on further study

Thanks very much for the response johnny.I really appreciate the advice.I'll take a look at GradIreland and email companies that are of interest.Hopefully I'm still eligible to apply for some of them.

I really hate the idea of sales work.As a pretty quiet person I'm not sure if I would be cut out for it.I'm not fussy but I dont think I'd be happy at this kind of work.

I do have a Linkedin profile but I've never really used it much to be honest.I'll also take a good look at it and try to start making some contacts.

PM sent about the HR work

Yeah JustMary, thats my problem.I've never really been able to figure out exactly what it is I want to do.I studied history because I found it really interesting and enjoyable in school.

I was in retail for 3 years(mainly part-time while at uni) before going travelling.I returned home in october and have been unemployed since.I really don't want to do a masters unless I'm certain it's something I really want to do.But at this point I feel I need to do something or i'll be unemployed or stuck in dead end jobs i hate for the rest of my life
