    Check http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE40D6100-40-inch-Widescreen-Interne/dp/B004TB4XFO

According to that description your TV is freeview, not freesat. So I would guess you would need a satellite box and dish to get the UK channels.

I have Samsung 40 inch led TV and I connected my Sky dish and Saorview aerial to it and can pick up all the free sat channels the same ones as the Sky box, the Saorview is tuned in perfect as well no need for any boxes. At the back of the TV there is a Satellite cable connection so I connected the dish aerial to it and ran a scan, it picked up all the free to air channels, all HD channels are there as well with no problems :D

OP, I presume you've selected "satellite" from the red button antenna menu when you're in the channel list?

Alright. Its just I checked the amazon and samsung sites - both said Freeview.

    On currys.ie http://www.currys.ie/Product/SAMSUNG-UE40D6100-40andquot-Full-HD-LED-3D-TV/305725/339.0

They say: "DVB-T2 Freeview HD tuner"

Can someone explain how this is freesat if all websites are saying freeview?

    Here's the manual.

You're kind of insulting the OP's intelligence to suggest that it has no sat. tuner.

Thanks for the manual. Apologies to the OP if I did offend. I saw the line in OPs post: "do I need a set top box as well as the in-built tuner to receive more channels from my digital satellite" and when I checked a couple of sites, I thought the TV only had freeview. (There has been occasions before where people bought a TV/STB and they made a mistake.)

TBH, I am only getting up to speed about the various satellite stuff - this forum has been great in picking up information. And yes you have guessed correctly: I don't know much! :o I never knew you could get Saorview and Freesat inbuilt into a TV here in Ireland.

The 6100 doesn't have a satellite tuner, a separate satellite receiver required with that TV.

The 6300 model does have an inbuilt satellite tuner, available from Powercity

    Here's the manual.

You're kind of insulting the OP's intelligence to suggest that it has no sat. tuner.

That's a bit harsh considering paultf was only trying to help. Also that manual states that the Satellite TV tuning is:
for LED 6200 series and above, Not for UK

    The OP also states:

Which is a little strange as any TV I've ever seen that has DVB-T(2) and DVB-S(2) tuners built in would have separate connections usually a Co-Ax and an F connector.

A quick Google confirms it though, this particular model does not have a Freesat tuner built in. So if the OP wants Sat channels he's going to have to get a separate box.

From what I have found so far it seems that it is freeview only and not freesat, However on amazon the tuner is spec'd as (DVB-T/T2/C/S2):DVB-T/C which suggests freesat i.e DVB-S2?
OP, I presume you've selected "satellite" from the red button antenna menu when you're in the channel list?
In the channel menu it doesn't give the option to select satellite, only Air or Cable, despite what is says in the manual even pressing the red button doesn't give me the option of selecting satellite input.

The Samsung website and e-manuals is useless with respect to the technical specifications of the tuner.
Thanks for your help so far.

    Solved so thanks to all

    DTV Reception (DVB-T/T2/C/S2) : DVB-T/C
I see part of your confusion, let me clarify, the first part before colon lists the options available, the part after colon indicates what the TV has, which is only DVB-T and DVB-C so no DVB-S2 therefore no Freesat tuner built in.

If you were sold this TV on the understanding that it has a Freesat tuner built in I'd be getting onto the Manager in that store ASAP.

What did you connect the satellite cable to then?

Nothing strange about it, a diplexed outlet would have separate connections for terrestrial & satellite & I thought it fairly safe to assume that the tv did too.

You said on your other thread that it was a built in free view tuner...?

This TV does not have a DVB-S2 tuner.

It has a hybrid DVB-T/C tuner which enables terrestrial and cable TV reception in certain countries depending upon whether it is connected to cable TV output or an aerial as it is a hybrid one tuner module. In Ireland the DVB-C end wont work as all DVB-C is encrypted by UPC. The DVB-T (Saorview) will work once an aerial is connected.

What the OP missed was reading the spec carefully, the answers to its limitations are after the colon as pointed out by gtg60 a few posts back. Each is a question, the answer is after the colon.

    Tuner/Broadcasting
    HD Tuner Built-in:Yes
    DTV Reception (DVB-T/T2/C/S2):DVB-T/C

    CI+:Yes
    Auto Channel Search:Yes
    EPG (8 days):Yes
    Teletext (TTX) (1,000 pages):Yes
