Assistance with rent

    Hi,

I am caught in a situation where I have a mortgage in one place and, due to a long period of unemployment, have had to take on a job in another town, which is not within commuting distance. This means that I am also paying rent on top of my mortgage only because of work. Is there any tax relief or anything that I could claim for this rent that I need to pay?

    Regards,
    Pamela

    Hmmm, sounds complicated.

There is a Citizens info page on the tax relief here:
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting_a_home/tax_relief_for_tenants.html

    It says this:
In order to claim tax relief, you must be paying rent for private rented accommodation which is used as your sole or main residence.

I guess it depends on what that means.

Maybe you can claim it if the rental accomodation is your main residence and not the mortgaged one.

Probably a good idea to contact revenue and explain your situation and ask them:

If you are claiming TRS on the mortgage interest you cannot also claim the Rent credit. If you are not claiming TRS on the mortgage interest you can only claim rent credit if you started renting before the 7th of December 2010. There is no rent relief for anyone who starts renting after this date.

Hmm... Obviously the rental apartment is not my sole residence. I generally spend four nights a week in the rental and three in the mortgaged property. We do claim TRS on the mortgage, so I guess that's a no-go then. I'm also only renting since August last year... I might still try Revenue and see what they say.

You can try Revenue if you want but what Daxve has said is correct on both counts. You started renting after 7/12/10, and you cannot be claiming mortgage interest relief as well as rent relief.
