    Hi all,

looking for some advice pls. I'm changing my car soon and would love a Mazda 6. I currently drive a ford mondeo. I travel approx 500km per week - mainly motor way driving. What are the cost implications (approx) of upgrading to a 2.2 engine??

ps - I know it depends on the WAY I drive and lots of other factors etc, but just an estimate of how much more costly driving a 2.2lt car would be would be great! Cheers

    Thx
    Trix

The Mondeo 1.8 diesel is a little long in the tooth, so I would expext the fuel bill to be almost identical. The Mazda 6 is a nice car. The 2.2 comes in 3 power outputs, 129bhp, 163bhp and 185bhp. Bear that in mind when buying and test driving.

For the type of driving your doing I wouldn't expect any measurable differences in economy, in fact, it may even be better.

just what I wanted to hear Nissan doctor :D Thx a mill!

129 bhp only for backward old Ireland unfortunately:rolleyes:!

Not exactly! Have you driven the 129 2.2 6?? I have and I can tell you, it's in no way inadequate. It's a very smooth power delivery, feels really good on the road and is very comfortable.

OP - have a drive of the 129 model and see what you think of it, I'm sure you'll like it :)

Mondeo 1.8 would be the old Endura indirect injection lump. Anything would give better drive & economy than that...

I'm not saying it's a good, bad or indifferent engine, I'm simply making the point that you can't have the more powerful versions of that engine in Ireland:)! If the 129 is that good then can you imagine what the 163 or 185 bhp models are like?

The ole torque can be very deceptive too, no doubt the 129 bhp version is adequate and more than capable etc etc.

Yeah, does BHP really mean that much for diesel anyway? Torque is probably a better gauge?

In any case, I had a 170 BHP Lexus IS220d for a few days a couple of weeks ago with a view to buying and it felt chronically underpowered, even compared to my 140 BHP Accord.

You can get the 163 here can't you? You can certainly get the 185 with a remap from Joe Power :p

Just checked the Mazda website, still 129 bhp only for Ireland!

Well at least Joe Power is also in Ireland :D

AFAIK the new CX5 is available with the 148 version. I would expect the next 6 will get this also. It really is ridiculous we only get the 129. Mazda make a great range of cars but shoot themselves in the foot with myopic policies like this.

I read somewhere that the newer Mazda 2.2 litre lump is very difficulte to remap due to access to the ECU being encripted or something.

There is always a way around these things. Manufacturers can encrypt all they want but you can be sure, someone somewhere will come up with a way of making money ;)

Not always... the 2.2 Toyota diesel can't be remapped.

The IS has more torque too, but an odd-ball power delivery. Honda feels more throttle responsive.

The gearing is the problem with the IS220d, it's very badly matched to the engines torque curve.

Who in the right mind would buy a Toyota with the idea to remap it in mind?

Anyone. Despite the cool kids on boards with opinions, a Passat is no more exciting than an Avensis, so why is one acceptable to remap and the other not?

I never said a Pisshat was "acceptable" to remap. I have no will to own either car.

So if you're making the point that theres a way to remap everything, but VWs and Toyotas are not acceptable, then do cars need to pass your criteria first?

Sure you could say that about the Mazda 6 surely.

I never said that any car was acceptable or unacceptable to remap. I just find it odd that someone would buy an Avensis and remap it because I haven't seen nor heard of it done before.

Fine if someone wants to do it, obviously it makes no difference to me at all.

From a 1.8 to 2.2 first thing in my way would be the tax, you are looking at an extra 300 annually.

Your economy would improve with a modern diesel (driving style dependant etc) over the Endura Diesel

OP just wondering does it have to be a 2.2? Plenty more 2.0 cars out there, 2.2 was just too high tax wise for a lot of people :(

    If it's a 2.2 the tax is €225 on the post-facelift models (2011 on).

The 129bhp is more than capable in the 6, it's a light car for its class and only really feels slightly lethargic if the overtaking gap is tight.

Joe Power can remap them but insists on a DPF delete - the 3 output levels of the 2.2 engine is down to mapping. Turbo/injectors are the same.

As for economy - there is a very steep drop off if you go over 120kph. But cruising at 120 should see 50mpg without much effort. Last tank I saw averaged out at 45mpg including a weekend of town driving.

Get a UK Sport spec or Irish Sprort SE if you are buying.

Whoops, forgot most people doesn't specialise in sub €400 specials :pac:

Sure a Merc S350 bluetec is 677 a year to tax, if the OP can afford to buy one 2nd hand...

Have Mazda fixed the DPF problem where diesel gets into the sump and then you need a new engine?

I don't think it is an issue on the facelifted cars, although checking the oil once a week can mitigate that on older cars.

New dpf is a closed system supposedly but time will tell regarding that. I haven't noticed any increase in oil levels even when driven around town in heavy traffic for a week or so solid.
