    Hi all,

Am new to boards.ie but came across it again whilst searching for clubs to join on the net (had previously signed up but forgotten all about it)

Anyway - I am looking to join a club in south dublin / wicklow but dont fancy paying massive costs or entry fees. I simply want to get my handicap back. I played off scratch for 5+ years but gave up for the last 2.5/3 due to living abroad etc. Estimate current handicap to be around 2/3 or with no practice but I will still probably play less than 35 times a year as I will only play on a saturday or sunday- once. Any ideas on membership options? Is a cheapy outside dublin the best way forward and then pay greenfees (with members) in dublin area for circa €30-40 ?

Go for cheap membership and then there are loads of opens on for around the 20 euro mark every weekend.

@Rasbit, if you know any members of Bray Golf Club there is a great offer on for the month of May only. A member can propose somebody and the joining fee has been waived, you only pay the pro rata sub from now until renewal on October 1st, should be around 600 euro or so and the annual fee is around 1200. Very challenging course with fantastic greens and friendly membership.

Where? Generally speaking there isn't a great selection of open days on at the weekends since member competition are usually of a Sunday and alot of clubs are busy Saturdays with societies and general green fees. Open weekends are more common on bank holiday weekends but scratch cups appear at weekends over the summer golfing season.
Open days however are common midweek in Dublin and it's surrounding golf clubs with at least a couple of choices on offer each day. However I take from your opening intro that this may not be of benefit with only weekends being a viable option.
In terms of joining a club you're best to set a budget and view the suitable clubs that meet your travel and budgetary requirements in the list as linked by golfwallah. If you've questions regarding a particular club then come back and ask here as there's bound to be a member or two who can give an honest appraisal.

No sign of that deal in Bray mentioned on the Bray GC website, where did you hear of that deal?

Guy I work with is a member. The deal only came out last week. Im sure if you ring the club you will get all the info. You will need a member to propose & second you.

    hi all,

    Thanks for all the responses,

The bray deal does sound fantastic and I would be interested if it is as outlined above, am calling around but im getting the feeling I dont know any memebers in Bray - investigating further.

The other option I am considering is the €150 in Blessington Lakes which would give me my GUI handicap, from there I could play in opens / scratch cups / general green fees which should give me a game say 3 weekends in a month which is fine at the moment and would work out at say an average greenfee of €30 x 30 games +€150 = €1050 for a years golf. If i play more it will be more but less will be less. any thoughts on that option?

More than 20 odd opens on next weekend in Leinster maybe not all suitable but i'm sure something would do. Most of them around the 20 quid mark.
