Local Park more rules than the Joy!

Hi I was out for a midweek cycle in my local park going uphill at a crawl when I was informed by the Park ranger that I was going the wrong way around a one way system. Nice chap only doing his job said that I could be reported by other park users and that they would have to act on that information which could lead to being banned from using the park.

I thought he was taking the piss at first but he informed me that they have to stop people on bikes regularly to inform them. How is it possible that me cycling up a hill at a crawl is more of a threat to other park users than a person say with a dog who lets their dog off their lead so it can chase a person on a bike or let their dog **** everywhere. How many dog walkers would you say have been prosecuted or fined for not picking up their dogs **** I would say 0.

My question is which Muppet's make the bylaws for the park and how if at all possible do you go about changing them. The park in question is Ardgillan Castle Skerries.

Presumable because another cyclist may be travelling down that hill and not expecting someone going the wrong way?

Re dogs - I don't think they allow dogs off a lead there. (It's a pity they wouldn't ban them and their owners from public spaces altogether).

I got ticked off for sitting on a swing there a few years ago.

It's only the last couple of years that they allowed bikes into Ardgillan. The problem is that if a load of cyclists turn up straying off the track, or going too fast, or going round the wrong way, they might just reconsider.I don't think they will be relaxing the rules any time soon. You would probably need to get in touch with Fingal CoCo parks section if you do wish to make representations

Ha! funny thing is the exit's at the top of the hill, so if they're gone throw ya out....

Your hundred quid household tax well spent there....

Funnily enough, there's a one-way system in the yard in the Joy.

They don't let you ride bikes there though ;)

Seriously guys, bringing dog owners and their dogs into it makes this thread one that should be moved into After Hours. It's arguing in the same vein as those who say all cyclists shouldn't be using the roads because there's some irresponsible ones out there.

Its a different chamois cream you'd need.

In all seriousness, most parks do not tolerate bicycles, so in Ardgillan, if they allow them to use the park within certain rules, that seems fair enough. By the sounds of things, he was hardly hounding you either, just a friendly word to let you know that you were heading the wrong way.

The dogsh*t part has no relevance, really. It is annoying, ignorant and extremely rude for dog owners to so blatantly ignore the rules, but doing the whole "you're giving out to me, but what about them!" thing is not a way to progress your argument.

In all seriouness the one way system is there for a good reason. If you go the opposite way around you end up going done a flat steep descent (up to 15%) with lots of walkers and children.
Seeing as how you can esily hit 50kph thats a recipe for serious accidents and injuries.
Personally would like some more variation but am thankful to Fingal County Council for opening Ardgillen to bikes in the first place.
