I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me with this.

I'm currently thinking of getting electric gates, well automation of exists gates.

There seems to be a couple of websites out there but I'd like to know what I'm getting into before speaking to some sales man about the system.

What systems are generally recognised as being durable products that last long term etc...

Also if you could recommend any supply and fit companies it would be great.

I personally wouldnt use anything other than DITEC or CAME automation gear they might be a bit more expensive than other systems but like anything you get what you pay for.

Its very hard to give a price or say what work is involved without actually seeing the gates as every set up is differant.

There are a couple of factors to take into account before deciding what system would suit your gates:

    Like
What type of gates you have,
    Do they swing or slide,
Are they hung in the centre of the pillar or at the back,
Are they strong enough to cope with the motors,
Is there enough room to fit the motors,
Would you get away with an overground system or would it have to be an underground system,
What finish is on your driveway,
How are the cables going to be run to each point.
Do you want intercom, keypad, loop detectors etc.

Its one of those jobs that need to be looked at in person to see whats involved.

As far as being durable and lasting long term thats all down to the quality of the gear and more importantly how they are installed.

What area of the country are you in?

    Thanks for the reply.

    The Gates Swing

Hung in the centre of the pillars

I would imagine they are strong enough to handle motors - the gates are roughly wide each and about 6ft high at the highest point (they peak in the middle, probably only 3ft high at the pillars)

    It's a tarmac finish

Cables will be run from the house under grass I assume - there will be a small amount of tarmac cutting required.

Yup we'll need an intercom, keypad and loop detector

    Based in Meath/Dublin

The only people I know out that way would be Auto Entry Systems,
they supply to the trade only but they also do installations. They have a website so you could google them.

They are good lads to deal with and use good gear(DITEC),
Maybe give them a call if you cant find anyone else closer to you.

You are a bit far away for me unfortunately:)

Also great quality have FAAC and V2, and it's big difference in price of kit V2, FAAC, CAME and DITEC.

V2 you can get here: http://www.gatewayironworks.com/

FAAC you can get here: http://www.nal.ie/

Is FAAC quality that good now. Have heard they have moved production to China and since that the quality has gone down.

@Gate Automation What cable do you recommend using for the low voltage gate controls (photocells etc).

My own was wired in solid cat 5 and it breaking my heart after 10 years.

Poly - poly cable as in covered in gel, or external cat5 black sleve, some cat5 have extremly low quality
