    Hi there,

I'm in north Dublin. I've been free lancing for years, never advertised but have done a lot. Recently worked on all the dresses for the Dunne wedding.

What sort of dresses are you looking for ?

I know a really talented dressmaker in Bray.
She's made some gorgeous pieces for me including a dress for a black tie occassion as well as a bridesmaids dress, to name but a few.
I now live 100 kms from Bray but wouldnt hesitate to make the trip again if I required her services, indeedin I have done in fact!
Have used numerous dressmakers over the years but this lady is by far the best hence distance isnt an issue!
Be sure to PM me if you'd like any further details.
    Aine

Just for the record she's made several wedding dresses over the years as well....and has pics of some on her wall for all to see!

The making of wedding dresses is a highly specialised area and at the end of the day it's fair to say you get what you pay for. People regularily underestimate the amount of work that goes into creating any garment from base pattern to finished piece. The number of times i have had people come to me to request 'just run me up a dress', and balk at the price quoted.
I have been teaching for six years in the Grafton Academy and have seen many students come and go. One of the most commonly heard phrases after a few weeks is "I never realised so much work went into it". It is then that I feel I've done my job, whether this person goes on to create her own work is up to her but I believe at that point I have educated her in the value of craft.
Mass produced ready to wear has done untold damage to a couture industry which dates back to the nineteenth century. Clothes are readily available at cheap prices and quite honestly only the discerning customers actually know what a good fit is.
After I have heard the student remark how surprised they are by the amount of work that goes into creating a piece, I then ask them how do they think the likes of Penneys is selling those tops for €5. Yes we agree some child somewhere is losing his childhood so that you can buy that €5 top to wear once and throw away...and don't get me started on the discarding of clothes.

If you want to learn to sew go to a class but don't expect miracles, have patience for it will progress slowly and then you might value the beauty of craft.
