Is it possible that my CPU is lying to me? :)

Hi, I've long considered overclocking my CPU, but seeing as I haven't really had to, i haven't bothered. One thing that always irked are the seemingly low temperatures at which my CPU idles (according to CoreTemp. During the winter of around 16 months ago, my CPU idled sub 20 degrees. Right now it's been under load for over 4 hours converting 8 gigabytes worth of video (using AVS video converter) and it is currently at 42 degrees.

I've been told that these temperatures are quite unusually low, and I am wondering if there is some sort of error? My CPU is an AMD Phenom X4 925 @ 2.8GHz. I replaced the stock fan with this when I built my system: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus

Nah seems ok to me, My i5 would hit around that temp converting video or editing and processing video

Huh. I was saying that from the point of view of it being lower than would be expected. So idling at around 20 degrees is normal enough?

    Thanks :)

Its lower than a normal X4 would idle at with the 212+, but not impossible. Grab HWmonitor and see what readings that gives. What temps are you getting for each core?

Interestingly enough, I cannot select each core individually. The drop down box is greyed out. Here's a screenshot of it currently. Any reason as to why I cannot access the other cores' temperature? (It's still converting video, I ran out of space on my SSD, so I had to restart :( )

    I will check HWMonitor.

I am getting virtually identical readings in HWmonitor. Each core is 39 degrees right now.

Not that unusual I get about 23-24 C with Cool n' Quiet enabled on a 965 BE with the same cooler, it idles at about 31 or so when overlocked to 3.9GHz and all CPU power management features turned off.

There is sometimes an offset you need to establish, depending on the CPU. overclock gurus know them, based on model. There was an offset for the 1055t (the X6) in my PC. Some seem to think the offset is as much as 10-15C on the Phenom IIs, this number is based on the distance from the sensor to the actual processing cores.
