Rear Mech Destroyed

    Got my bike back from a local bike shop yesterday and decided to take it out for a spin. Once I got to a point where I needed to switch to high gears I heard the derailleur/rear mech hit the spokes a few times and then the back wheel completely seized. Managed to avoid the bus behind me and get up on the kerb to have a look.

    Complete carnage - rear mech ripped off. Chain mangled, spokes of the wheel bent in a bit. The bike was in for a new chain and cassette a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't happy with the gear selection so they recommended a new rear mech. That was added in the other day and yesterday was my first spin with the new components.

    Bringing it back to the bike shop now. Will give them a chance to defend themselves first but it is scary that they would let something which you would think obvious out of the shop and onto the road

    Sounds scarily like what happened to a friend of mine, on the WW200 last year, after he had his bike "serviced" in a local shop (which I happen to live near and wouldn't even buy a puncture repair kit from.... and told him as much beforehand, yet he still had it done). Whereabouts in the country are you based?

    I am in south dublin. I am reluctant to name the shop as it seems as if it was a geniune oversight on the part of the mechanic.

    I brought the bike back in this morning and it was a case of him not setting the upper limit on the Derailleur so when i switched to the higher gear the chain/rear mech went right into the wheel causing complete carnage. The mech snapped in half - 7 or 8 spokes broke on the wheel itself.

    The mechanic on seeing the damage took full responsibility for the damage, took it back and will replace all the parts which where damaged destroyed which is sound enough. But its something I would definitely be aware off from now on, it was a really dangerous and scary thing to happen

    In fairness new, it could hardly be considered a genuine oversight if you could've been killed. More like reckless negligence. Pretty much every moving part on a bike is a vital part. Pretty much every part should be checked in a service. If a mechanic is prone to oversight, maybe he's in the wrong job...
