I have always considered buying a Saab but haven't got round to doing so. I am thinking of buying a diesel and see a 05 19tdi for around 5k . This seems good value , as the car is high spec and has around 130k on it. Any advice on reliability of these and which is the better model to look out for.

2 different versions of this engine 120 & 150bhp. Had the 150 engine in a Vectra SRI and it was a cracker. The 150 version however can suffer from a swirl valve issue which can prove costly if it goes wrong. The issue does not affect the 120 version

is this a similar issuw to the BMW swirl flapp issue?
and can it be overcome woth preventative maintainance similar to the blanking plates fitted to BMW's?

Also know someone looking at the newer 1.9 TiD Saab's.

Apparently the EGR valve fouls the swirl valve actuator. Its about €800 to fix as it requires a replacment manifold. I think they changed the set up after 07 to address this. Someowners have installed an EGR blanking plate to stop the fouling.

The symptoms include a loss of power in the lower revs before the turbo kicks in and as it gets worse it wil log a error code of P1109

Mine had started doing this just before I traded it in! Still miss that car every day though!

It only affects the 150 version and most Saabs seem to have the 120 engine. The 150 engine however is so much better to drive though.
