    Hi guys,
Just a quick question. I have just built my first PC, everything has gone well, OS installed and booted up. Only problem is the new 500GB hard drive is only showing up as 465GB with 449GB available. I've checked disk management and there's no unallocated space. Is it normal for a new hard drive to be missing so much space after being partitioned and formatted? out of curiosity I checked how much my main use PC (bought from a shop) shows, its a 1TB HDD and its missing near 100GB so is this a normal thing?
Sorry if this a daft question.
    Cheers in advance.

yes, you'll always lose a good chunk of drive space, although from what i remember its down to the actual drive size being stated incorrectly rather than actually losing space.

look on the bright side, at least it's only one drive. :)

i have a raid array with 8x 2tb drives in it and i don't even want to think about the space i'm losing (even though i'm not *really* losing it). :)

Disk manufacturers use the SI defination of a Gigabyte in which 1 GB = 1,000,000,000b. When reporting the disk size Windows (And pretty well everything else in the computing world with the exception of HDDs) use the more correct IEC version (A Gibibyte or GiB) which is actually 1 GiB = 1,074,741,824b. Windows is simply wrongly labeling GiB as GB .

A GB is actually only .931GiB, hence a 500GB drive is reported as 465GB in windows and a 1TB drive as 931GB.
