My laptop has been cutting out on full battery lately for some reason?

It doesn't switch back on until it is plugged in, but today i noticed that it said battery not recognised but i took the battery out and put it back in again and all is well.
Why is it shutting down so abruptly?
    It is a 3yr old Advent 5431

I have had my fair share of problems but the battery was replaced a year ago! And yes i was 100% full when it was unplugged! Its not as if the battery runs down really quickly the laptop completely shuts off as if i was holding the power button down and it cuts out.

When i unplug it from the power adapter it works fine and then out of the blue cuts out!:confused:confused:

Does the machine cut out without the battery installed? It could be that the battery has failed, they tend to after a year of frequent use, although not as severly usually!

Its only when its on battery power that it just out of the blue shuts down...Also my insurance ran out on it in December! My last battery never did this.. it used to just run low very quickly not just cut out!

Are you having any other problems, such as the clock not keeping correct time ?

Have a look at battery maintenance options, also look in the BIOS (some machines have extra options in there) .... but check the event viewer and see is it something in there. Go to Device Manager and make sure all the hardware is ok.

It was working fine for a year you say?

An Advent over 3years old will more than likely have problems like that regardless of the state of the battery, this is a long shot but if you still have problems after everyone elses suggestions, try this:
-take out battery and hold power buttons for about 2-3secs
-take off the bottom of the laptop(whichever compartment holds the RAM and CMOS battery)
-Take the RAM and CMOS battery out and hold the power button for 60secs
-Put everything back and try it
