Hi, does anyone know a good dentist that takes a mould and gets a proper gum-shield made for sport - specifically in this case Gaelic football.

I contacted a local dentist here in Drogheda and I was quoted €150 which is extreme to say the least.

    Anybody got any advice?

Confidental in Cahir Co. Tipp do them for around €100. Moulded gumshields are essential for football, got to look after them teeth!!

Thanks, but looking for something in the Louth/Meath/Dublin region if possible.

Got quoted €130 through the local Smiles dentist in Drogheda.... So looking like €150 was not that expensive compared to the competition...

Didn't think it would be this expensive, but if it lasts at least a few years*, it is probably worth it...

    * Do they come with a warranty?

 at the cost being quoted nowadays. I got one in 1990 (I'm long retired) and it cost me £20 sterling. From memory, the dentist recommended replacing it every five years but mine did me for a lot longer than that - I never actually replaced mine.

TBH id recommend you bypass your dentist altogether and buy one direct from the oproshield website. They range in price with the top level gumshield costing around e70. As far as i know they'll send you out a mould kit first. They used to have cheaper ones for around e20, i picked one up in elverys, very comfortable and never had any problem with it, good dental guarantee on them too. Hope this helps!

Does anybody have any experience with these guys?

    http://www.promouthguards.ie/

I rang and they quoted me €60 for the standard non-custom color model which seems reasonable...

I also found this website which sends you out a kit to get your impressions; based locally in Meath as well:

I would prefer to get someone to take my molds for me to be honest; I got braces off a few months back and have a fixed retainer behind the top and bottom rows on my teeth - So I am guessing some kind of adjustment would have to be made to be gum shield with that mind...
