Should my p60 have included Maternity Benefit

    Hi,
I was on Maternity Leave in 2007. My employers included Maternity Benefit as part of my gross pay on my payslips (even though it was paid directly to me) and then deducted it from net. Therefore I paid tax on the maternity benefit.
At the end of the year my employers included the Maternity Benefit on my P60 gross pay figure and so when I completed my full tax return using this figure I did not get back the tax due me.
This only came to light this year and I am too late to get the tax back from Revenue. But my employers will not admit that they made a mistake including it on my P60.
Are my employers correct? Should it have been on my P60 if I received my Maternity Benefit directly from the State?
    Any help much appreciated
