It depends where you go and what sort of place you stay in.

I've been to Sharm and the end we were in is basically the beach with a continuous line of hotels of it, a road running parallel to the sea with a row of hotels the other side and then miles and miles of desertly nothingness.

I liked it though, you wouldn't want to wonder around too much because other than hotels there wasn't much to see, but it felt fairly friendly and it was pretty clean. the hotels themselves are practically self contained resorts with several restaurants, bars, entertainment and a few have night clubs. Most have day trips etc and the desert safari on quad bikes seemed to be pretty popular. personally i just went diving most days.

From what i gather, if you stay nearer to the actual village of Sharm, there is a market and bars etc to explore, but I didn't make it that far.

I think for a proper tour of Egypt you would benefit from doing a 2 week package holiday to include a nile cruise. I did this some years back and we had 5 nights on the cruise with all foods and some sightseeing tours included (extra for drinks cos was not all inc at the time) and got to see Luxor, aswan, nubian villages, camel rides etc. Came off the cruise and spent 2 nights just relaxing in a hotel in luxor, enjoying the hotel entertainment. Then we headed off to the red sea resort of Hurghada which is beautiful. We stayed in the Hilton which is very near the sea and did snorkelling and that kind of stuff there. We did leave the hotel grounds many times and go walking into the town for something to eat or drink and there was never any hassle. On top of this we took a coach to cairo and visited the pyramids and sphinx there plus the museum which was a great experience, stayed the night in the hotel there and then as it was the last day, we flew from cairo home instead of journeying back to Hurghada. It was an incredible experience. I think including the flights and accomodation (all 5 star) and spending money we spent around 5k but well worth it as it is a once in a lifetime holiday.

As for Sharm, it is a typical holiday resort. We went for a week in 2007 but literally just to eat, drink and soak up the sun. Not a whole lot to do bar walk the town and shop but nice and relaxing if that is the type of holiday you are looking for.

I would not go there for a while due to secuirty reasons.

Everything there has changed utterly since Tahir square

    Reviews from pre-revolt are obsolete.

There is a growing security threat in the sinai which could target sharm

Police at Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula have been attacked about 50 times by Palestinian armed groups and a local branch of al-Qaeda since the Jan. 25 uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak, an Egyptian daily reported citing a security source.

Certain areas, such as Sheikh Zuwayed, central Sinai and Rafah were now outside the control of security forces, Egypt’s al-Masry al-Youm quoted the source as saying.

The attacks, which were mainly focused on the mountains of central Sinai, were carried out by the Palestinian armed groups Jaljalat, Army of Islam, Ezz Eddin al-Qassam Brigades and al-Qaeda in the Sinai Peninsula, the source said.
