Hi, what are people's opinions on the Flahavans's Microwaveable Quick Oats. I bough a tupe of it yesterday as i think it might be handy for a snack in work in the morning.

2 scoops of oats, 4 scoops of water / milk, 2 mins in the microwave...

    More info here:

    http://www.flahavans.com/product/porridgeoats/micro.htm

Looking forward to people's opinions on this...

You can microwave the regular oats as well.

Ok cool, thanks how long should you microwave regular oats for...

What's the difference in the oats above then...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭Stench Blossoms

I think they are just finer. You could blend regular own oats to make them finer but I don't think it's really necessary.

I put mine (40g) with milk (200mls) in the microwave for 3mins.

I like the quick oats, but I find you usually need 5 scoops of milk.

Thanks all... i hate porridge and am trying to make myself like it with the addition of some berries, so it will probably be a case of which ever tastes the best :(

    Make pancakes out of it.

I use 60g porridge, 150ml milk, 1 egg. Blend together, leave over night in the fridge.

I also hate it, but want to start having a healthier breakfast. No chance i'll be making pancakes as I generally would be eating this at work. I know that's not going to change so 'make time' while ideal is simply not realistic.

What's the best way to make porridge taste less miserable, I'm reading that muesli (think i have the flahavans stuff) contains to much salt and sugar in the form of dried fruit. I've got a handle on lunches and dinners but breakfast is still a bit of a problem. I need to eat something reasonably filling or i'll be at the toast all morning until lunch.

    Sorry for hijacking !

Have you a toaster in work?

Haven't tried it myself but it was suggested here before.

Cook the pancakes the night before and then pop them in the toaster to heat them up.

No probs, in the same both at the moment, i eat 5-6 meals / snacks a day and breakfeast is the problem for me... i have a protein shake at 07:30 and cereal (alpen & albran & nuts) at 10:00 and this is the meal i need to change

I use that porridge too.the microwave stuff.I have a banana and blueberries and sesame seeds in it.yummy stuff.

I go on and off blueberries though,I get sick of them sometimes.the banana and the seeds always though.every single morning.its lovely.

I'm told grated pear is lovely in it too.my lady mixes her porridge with natural yogurt, apple, strawberries and or grapes and a banana too.lovely stuff.she'd obviously have it cold.I like mine roasting!

I'm already cooking dinner and making a salad or something for lunch the night before (X 2, one for me, one for her). Really, pancake making and messing about with a toaster isn't gonna work. Also, I could see a few toaster related disasters !

    It was only a suggestion...geesh.

You make thick american style pancakes. You can cook up loads in one batch and freeze them, these pop in the toaster easy as they are not floppy. You could add raisins in too, they are sort of like scones sometimes.

You can just eat the oats uncooked with milk too, no need to actually make porridge. I prefer cold milk, oats & maple syrup over cooked porridge.

Museli is just uncooked oats with dried fruit & nuts added. You can make your own version adding fresh fruit to bulk it out more.

If you leave oats soak in the fridge overnight they microwave a better, those microwave packs are very expensive.

I used to hate it but now I've made it taste really good!

I use just half a small cup porridge and three quarters of a cup of milk which I microwave for just 60 seconds. I then add a half cup or kelkin's granola for some texture, some strawberries, and a bit of honey though the honey can almost make it too sweet.

If going with honey and you really want the health benefits make sure to go with the Manuka stuff.

Cool, thanks for all the advice... will try out a few different alternatives and get back to you on them, thanks again ;)

Also, Aldi apparently sell linseed cheap which I'm going to start adding for the health benefits.

Anything and everything, I try to mix it up as much as possible.

My favourites are a little jam, honey, dried cranberries, raisins, raspberries, apple (in at the start so it cooks a little), a little cinnamon.

I vary making it on water/milk/both and mix ingredients etc.

    Keeps it interesting.

I make porridge and then add it to a fruit smoothie. It works out at about one bowl of porridge across 5 smoothies though so I don't know if the health benefits are worth it or not!

Blueberries are great, but if you're trying to mask the taste raspberries are better again. They burst and stir right into cooked porridge with great flavour

Agave syrup is another great option. Nice and sweet and still natural. Available in any health food store and not too dear.

+1 for the oats and cold milk. Different texture entirely and great with fruit/berries/flax

IMO the pancakes are worth the effort

If you were taking flavoured Whey protein, throw 50g of oats into the shaker with whey and milk/water and let them soak for 15 mins

Or throw some in a blender with some banana, natural peanut butter, milk and cinnamon for a thick tasty shake (beware - its a bit calorie heavy)

What kind of porridge do folks get?

At home I have fancy organic jumbo oats or stuff like that..

For work [breakfast at desk a lot] I got Lidl cheap 'fine grain' Oats?

Does it matter, are "jumbo" oats any better?

I get the flahavans instant oats, very easy to prepare and quite nice. They come in a big red cylindrical tub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 477 ✭✭oo7

I now eat the normal Flahavans cold (raw) with mixed nuts and milk

Its Flahavens Jumbo or nothing

I buy the porridge from Tesco. I think its 89c for 1kg.

I noticed that you said you have protein shakes, I put a scoop or 2 in my porridge for breakfast sometimes, I find it very nice, chocolates my favourite, its like eating ready break that I used to eat as a child :) Often have it as my post workout meal also. Just make sure to add the protein after you microwave the porridge, you may have to add more water/milk then to mix it in.

Plain old flahavans jumbo oats. Half a mug of oats, a full mug of water, microwave for 150 seconds and bam, you're done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭PauloConn

40g of regular flahavans, 30g of milled linseed from Aldi, 40g whey protein, doing vanilla at the moment and its top drawer. All this will 250ml of ice cold low fat milk.
    Breakfast of champions.....

    They are soooooo tasty!

I normally buy Kavanagh's Organic Porridge Oats in Aldi.

I started soaking porridge oats over night and leaving in the fridge.

    Finding the results better.

Do people find a difference using various brands?

Blend together as in whisk or in a blender/ bullet? I have made "drop scones" before nutri ninja-ing the porridge to a flour, and then going equal measures porridge and milk, with an egg, and adding a teaspoon of baking powder for a bit of rise. Passed the children test anyway!

No porridge thread complete without an overnight oats suggestion, and it is too warm for me to have porridge at the moment. I do equal volume of porridge, milk and natural yogurt, a scoop of whey (normally strawberry), and add berries (fresh or frozen). Again, one of the children who won't eat porridge will eat overnight oats (made with a flavoured yogurt, minus the whey). It's one of the most used food suggestions I ever picked up on boards!

You can do either. I normally blend the oats into a flour and then whisk in the egg and milk! :)

Yeh I find the flahavans or Aldi organic oats much much nicer. Much creamier. I rolled my eyes at it before when recommended but definitely I prefer them.

Also soaking overnight and cooking slowly in a pot in the morning gives best results I find.

I love porridge though so I don't have the trauma of eating gruel that some folk do.

Also agree with the overnight oats suggestion, I bring them if I'm in early and they're delish.

I think the trick with these instant porridge is to add mor milk and cook for longer. It produces a creamer porridge that is much nicer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭Dixie Chick

I also used to hate porridge and now I really miss it if I dont have it for breakfast.

I make mine with stewed apple and also a spoon of the golden crunch linseed from lidl. it is lovely.

My simple one which I have every morning without fail is

    50g oats
    60g whey (vanilla)
    50g blueberries (fresh or frozen)
    4 lumps of frozen spinach

Blitzed in the nutribullet and drink in the car on the way to work. Total of one minute from start to car

One suggestion if you want to get more greens in, is to grate courgette into your porridge before heating it. I know it sounds crazy but the crunchy texture of the courgette skin is actually quite nice in porridge and you barely notice that it's in there.

I usually use Tesco organic porridge oats and mix in half almond milk/half water. Then I grate about half a courgette in and stir. Bang it in the microwave for two minutes and top with blueberries/raspberries and sometimes protein powder if I've been at the gym.

If adding milk I would only put in 2 tablespoons as to be honest between the egg and banana the mixture comes out perfect.

I would put the egg in first(2 tablesspoons of milk) and the banana as this prevents oats and protein powder from sticking to the bottom.

Always milk for me. Scoop of porridge. 2 scoops of milk. spoon of honey. Half scoop of a dried mixed berry mixture. 2 mins in micro. Sprinkle of cinnamon.

I usually do 1/2 milk 1/2 water-Milk makes it a lot creamier and nicer

I've been using milk alone but that's mainly because it's the only time of day I drink milk so otherwise I'd be eliminating it from my diet.
