This year in my school the parents association will be at the debs. Anyone have any idea what we can do to stop this?

Why are they attending it this year rather than previous years?

You could set up your own debs and refuse to sell tickets to the parents in protest.

Apparently its to stop people under 18 from drinking. IMO that should be up to the venue. This year under 16s aren't allowed go and students that didn't do ty can't go.

That was suggested and everyone seems to want to go to the proper debs.

Why would anybody under 16 be going to a Debs?

Even more reason to start your own debs in protest, why should certain students be excluded from an event that most school goers look forward too and remember for the rest of there life. To be honest email the local paper and let them know whats going on.

I meant students that left the school in 2011. Only people that left in 2012 can go to our debs, normally the people that didn't do ty and left the year before can come back.

Ahh ok that makes more sense. The only way around it I see is too start your own debs and not sell tickets to the parents but you will need the support from the majority of the students in your year and if they already decided the proper debs is the way to go then there is not much you can do.

I've gotten a few peoples support on a petition hopefully that helps.

It's quite possibly a requirement of the hotel.

That is fare enough that the underage people are not aloud to drink, but lets face it if someone wants drink bad enough they are going to. My assumption would be that the parents association will be attending just as they may be seen as a deterrent to try and stop the underage people from drinking. At the end of the day they have no power over you from drinking and it is up to the venue themselves to detect the underage drinkers

Under 16's and transition year are not allowed to go, As in the school? is refusing to sell them tickets or whoever is responsible for tickets.

I checked with the venue, it's not. Its also the same place as last year.

Its not the TYs that aren't allowed go. Last year the rule that anyone that was in third year 2 or three years ago was allowed go. So say if I don't do ty and my friends did I would have my debs this year and they will have their debs next year but they were normally go to my debs. i.e. they could have gone to the debs that they should have been in as well as the debs that they are in because they did ty. This year is is 6th year only.

Its the parents association that are arranging it.

They also implied that your date must be female. I don't think it is an issue but it might be interesting to being a friend and say it is my bf :L

Its not really, it just says she and her in 4 different places, it should be they and them being pc and all, buts its not biggie. I think I've heard of people bringing male friends before, not that I plan to though.

Is it though, Its gonna be soo creepy with adults people there. The last debs I went to was unreal with all that went on. It couldn't happen with people supervising. All I'm gonna say is the gf couldn't wait to get home, and the rest belongs in AH.

if the sex was so good, why did the gf not wait to go home?

Ah well that's fair enough, it would've been nice if they didn't make assumptions though. I thought you meant it was specifically mentioned that you could only bring girls to it.

Not letting the transition years go is fairly awful though, did many of your original year do TY?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭finality

Why do parents have anything to do with it in the first place? In my year a group of students are organising everything, it's nothing to do with the school or parents. The idea of parents supervising makes it seem very childish to me.

Yeah its a decently sized school though. There's 110 6th years, 48 people do ty every year. They cap it at 48 for some reason. Apparently its the numbers that is stopping them going. Its in the red cow though, so I don't see the problem.

That's what we wanted but the parents association just decide to take over everything.

We actually had a fight with the parents association recently. They wanted the bus to return home at 3, we wanted 9 the next morning, the letter we got about the debs say 6. Which is reasonable enough.

So almost a third of the year, to hell with that so!

It didn't go that far, but more than it would have with your mates ma looking at you :pac: I should have said she didn't want to wait till she got home. At her debs there were at least 5 girls there were topples by the end of the night, that wouldn't have happened at all with parents around.

    Togepi wrote: »

Its actually more than a third. The people that are a year ahead and a year behind could go. In the old way it worked everyone was allowed go for two years. Everyone could go 5 years after you started first year and 6 years after you started first year. For someone who does TY they were allowed go the year before their actual debs (after 5 years) and to their actual debs (after 6 years). If you didn't do TY you could go to you actual debs (after 5 years) and to the debs the year after you graduate (after 6 years). So presuming the numbers stayed the same, there was 110 that should be able to go that cant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,671 ✭✭✭GarIT

I forgot one of the most stupid parts. Anyone under 18 must either a) be escorted onto the bus and collected from the bus by a parent or b) bring a signed form with your parents names, address, two contact numbers and an email address.

Don't some of the teachers go to the debs? a few went to mine last year .
Some places might not check id I don't think the place I went to last year checked anyones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,572 ✭✭✭Canard

    What the hell.

Our 5th years who did TY arent allowed to go because they'd be tired in school the next day - stupid yes, but I dont really care, I never liked them. :L

But that isnt a debs, that's a 5 year old's birthday party by the sounds of it...I'd boycott it, wouldnt be giving my money to a venue like that, how the hell are they expecting customers with those policies?!

I realize its the law but there is a line between responsible and overbearing.

Oh parents usually aren't allowed to go in mine. And it's the debs commitee which organises it then the parents do the graduation . Parents shouldn't be allowed to go it's the students night not there's. How many parents would be going?

Its not the venue at all, I have heard they don't care about ID at all, its the parents association.

We arranged our own unoffical grad night, its next week and we even arranged with the bus company that we are allowed drink on the bus. So 6 months after a completely mad night when were all older at the debs we have a super controlled night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,572 ✭✭✭Canard

any chance you could call up the venue and sneakily change the night? :pac:

It's gonna be a sick night bitcheezzz!! :P

The Debs committee organises ours too, but the debs committee is just the full parents assocation + the principal + 3 of our prefects. Were completely outnumbered on the decisions. I doubt any parents will go. The letter we got says parents are allowed go this year too but I would move out if my ma tried to go to the debs.

We have 3 nights grad night, graduation night and the debs. Grad night and graduation are seperate because of incidents a few years ago. For grad night we got together with the nearby girls school and are getting 10 busses to the other side of the country and have a nightclub rented out for the night to cater for up to 600 ppl. Its completely unoficial there won't be a parent in sight. Then we have graduation night the last day of school, we have a mass in the school and then most students and some teachers go to a pub near the school. Debs is the mess that im talking about now.

Id try anything, other people are saying just tell the parents assocation to F off on the night. Myself and two other lads seem to be the only people willing to do anything to sort something out. Everyone else moans on Facebook all day and does nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 923 ✭✭✭biohaiid

Very happy we dont have a debs now!haha
We have a grad, waaay more laid back.
All the teachers come and parents/families too, but its not a problem. Its even better really. :)
No rules about underage drinking or anything, one or two teachers always buy you a 'congradulations' drink
All the graduates get into the nightclub and we all stay in the hotel that night.

    I cant wait. :)

The venue are the ones lose their licence if underage drinking is going on, I would be very surprised if they 'didn't care' about underage drinking, particularly such a large well-known establishment.

Why don't they just insist everyone have Age ID cards if they wanna buy drink? I've yet to ever meet anyone with a fake Age ID card, and you can only get them when you're 18. I doubt the venue would take such a drastic measure as to get the parent's association involved - after all, why they want to be responsible, they also want to students to have a good debs.

The whole parent escort thing is absolutely ludicrous. Imagine getting off with someone in front your or your friend's mother/father? I know if I was under 18 anyway, I definitely wouldn't bother with it, and if it was very expensive, I wouldn't bother with it regardless.

Because its your last night all together ever, its like all your childhood relived in one night 3 months after its over. Its just after the last summer you have with your childhood friends. Everyone is too scared to do anything incase they end up splitting into groups.

I meant compared to the over reaction, they obviously care. But they aren't the ones that say you need written permission to go in if your under 18 and that your mates parents have to keep an eye on you. Its going to be particularly awkward for me because my mam's friend is going to be there.

Nope that's what I've been told by everyone. No one wants to make our own debs because they are worried that half will go to one and the other half to the other one.

Aside from the problems with hotel licences and underage drinking etc etc, nobody has forced any of you to go to this debs, yet it sounds like all of your year have bought tickets and now are moaning. why did you buy tickets?
