Rugby, Crossfit and Paleo.

    Hi all,
    Rugby season is just over and I'm having a look around as to what i can get up to in the off-season to build towards next year.
    Ive landed on crossfit, a gym has just opened up near me and I really like the look of the sport.
    Does anyone have any experience mixing the two sports? is crossfit training benificial to rugby?
    on another note im considering supplementing this training with a paleo diet, (basically eliminating grain based foods and most dairy products from my diet) can anyone advise if there is any disadvantages to going on a paleo diet to improve rugby fitness.

    Truthfully this is probably better suited to the health and fitness forum then here however I'll see what people's responses are here before throwing it over.

    That all said what position do you play, what exactly are you off season goals and what are your current stats

    No personal experience of Crossfit myself.

    And it does look like a nice regime....but...

    More and more feedback is coming in that it could very quickly lead to overtraining...and worse.

    Also, it seems to be regime that exists only for itself. I.e. to become good at Crossfit.

    But others may disagree.

    Although it is primarily an MMA forum there's a good mix of disciplines, including Rugby, discussed at Sherdogs Strength & Conditioning.

    Crossfit is discussed there, though they are not big fans there will be reference to other sites.

    I play wing or centre, and aiming to increase speed, power and agility.

    No current stats unfortunately, my club arent that big on sports science currently, haha.

    As these are pretty generic goals I will throw this over to the health and fitness forum as chances are you will get more replies that may be of benefit to you

    Crossfit can be great, when programmed intelligently. Which depends on the gym.

    If you're playing rugby at a very high level and have an intense preseason, or are carrying existing injuries, Crossfit probably isn't for you. I say this because the off season should be used for restorative and prep work to get your thru the season, CF doesn't always provide that.

    But if you're healthy and recover ok, there's nothing wrong with doing some CF.

    With regards Paleo, if you're doing highly glycolytically demanding activities, you need carbs. There's nothing that says Paleo MUST be low carb, it just tends to happen that way because of the nature of the foods you're eating. So just try to eat more fruit, berries and sweet potatoes.

    If you want to train in the off-season for rugby, you'd be best to get individualised programming for your sport. Something that will work on improving your weaknesses, working on the strengthening you in the moves that are most important to the game, increasing speed and further making your body more preventative against injury.
    Crossfit will make you good at crossfit, pretty much increasing your work capacity over a duration of 10-25mins, which is not the best relationship to a 2x40mins work.

    i found crossfit football to be very good for rugby related S+C program. It's based on the crossfit principles but more focused on applying that to american football and rugby. Give it a look
