Is it worth getting certification from microsoft/sun/etc if you are doing a computer science degree? Would these certs increase your chances of getting a job or would they have negligible benefit alongside the degree?

Depends on the company you apply for. They maybe trying to become a Silver/Gold Microsoft partner and this requires a certain number of certified developers, along side other requirements.

It's worth more than not having it, not worth anywhere near as much as the degree or relevant experience, but with all other things being equal it would be good to have.

If nothing else it shows interest, initiative and some degree of competency (depending on which specific cert).
