Does anyone think this will make a dent on the current issues in Irish prisons? I thought the main issue was the vast number of people in doing under a year?

On a slightly unrelated note - I was quite surprised to see that the chief officer of Mountjoy saying they could solve the issues of drugs coming into the prison by screening the visitor area. He believed this was a step too far. I like to think I'm pretty liberal and generally on the side of the prisoners but surely the ends justify the means on that one?

EDIT by screening I mean the plastic walls with phones like you see on US cop shows. The screens simply prevent physical contact.

Listen, Behind the anti-drug policies there is the reality that without some drugs getting in to the prisons there would be chaos inside, Most Prison Officers would privately tell you that themselves. A prisoner doesn't leave his addictions out in the Reception.

I hope the new ideas being put forward will include a proper check on prisoners before they released once half the sentence is done otherwise repeat crime will continue and we will have the Gardaí screaming for yet more resources.

Interestingly enough its the worst drug of all that is the easiest to smuggle into prison, Heroin, It can easily be concealed on the body, Screens won't stop that but screens will stop bulkier drugs like Hash/Weed getting in as these drugs are far harder to hide and you also have a dog to get past. Hence soft drug users will be temped to take harder drugs thus continuing the cycle of crime once they are released.

As far as the screening thing goes I'd be for it. Up until very recently ( :( ) I worked in a pub where a lot of the prison officers from Mountjoy go at the end of the week. I've asked a few of them about what they think needs changing and most of them said the amount of drugs and mobile phones going into the place was ridiculous. The other problem was 2-man cells.

They'd also like a reduction in the amount of dirtbags going in there too but sure... :pac:

Some interesting points. I'd missed the one about people going cold turkey and/or rioting. I 'd argue that methadone and othe drugs can be prescribed - of course one could see a trade in these springing up/increasing if not properly controlled. However until they get the numbers down the possibility of a riot is probably the biggest argument against doing it!

When I say screens I mean a barrier to prevent even the smallest package from being transfered. As far as I know there is already stringent searches and a dog.

I disagree screens stop everything passing between visitors as they can only communicate via phone the glass/wall stops all other contact.

But they will find other ways sadly.

The drugs can be thrown over the wall.Screening wont work.So what if they want to take drugs in jail thats their choice.Jail is meant to keep people away from the law abiding people. You are put in as punishment not to be punished inside.
In 1 jail a guy used to send his clothes to his mother to be washed in a bag.Yes it was searched but when hash is sown into the shoe sole it does not get found. That was the Clondalkin jail.So you see there are many ways a guy was brought from prison to court and a guy sat beside him in the busy court and slipped drugs into his pocket. You can bribe officers who would rather people were drugged up and asleep than crawling the walls.
Too many people are in jail over fines also.

This is nice step by the justice minister to release the numbers of prisoners because of overcrowding of the cells.

He told her he has hyperactivity disorder so he needs hash to stay calm.Thats what he says. His father also smokes hash so they are desenticised to it.
They give you sleepers and foy in prison anyhow so they are drugged up free.
And there is always hooch.I have even heard of a guy burning shoe polish to get off his head. They will do anything. There bodys need drugs.
Its very easy to smuggle drugs up the old cakehole.
Prison officers have gone to jail for bringing in drugs and mobile phones.
You can even charge a mobile phone with a battery off a radio and a wire.
:pac: If only these people would use their Mc Guiver skills for the betterment of society.
