Jobs for Foreigners in Ireland

    Hi all,

One of my friends who is not from Ireland has asked me if it is easy for foreigners to get a job here. I'm not quite sure how to answer this because a lot of people I know have emigrated, after they have gained a higher level education, but they do not want a low qualified job. Are there many opportunities of jobs in bars, restaurants, supermarkets, etc? And is there much legal work to be done before you can get a job here?

Thank you in advance for any responses!

Depends on whether the friend is from the EEA or not, doesn't it?

AFAIK, if coming in from outside of the EEA, then you'll need a work permit and a GNIB stamp 4. And they're not at all easy to get right now, given the unemployment situation.

Yes I know about EU citizenship and the right to work in all EU countries freely, etc. However I also know friends of mine who have had trouble in different EU countries, yet were EU citizens.

I was also asking whether there are jobs in bars, shops, anywhere a student might work. I don't know if many pubs, nightclubs, have job offers at the moment. And have foreign people experienced much difficulty getting jobs here, just because they are not Irish?

Anyone coming here looking for a job needs their head examined - unemployment is sky high and getting worse.

It entirely depends on the sector... I know two German software engineers that do a 3 month+ here every year for about 10 years now - they actually come for the fishing - work all week and spend the weekend on the lakes!!!

So true. I'm blessed with French and a bit of Spanish myself otherwise it would have been something minimum wage for I-Shot-Jr.

No offense but you go into any shop in Ireland and I'd say there's no more than 20% of their work force is Irish ,the rest of foreign staff. So yea foreigners seem to be working

Yes, but how do you know they are foreigners? Anyone who moved to Ireland during the boom years could easily hold an Irish passport by now, as could their children! Such people would find it much easier to find a job than someone arriving today...
