hello, ive been 2 years now unemployed, ive sick already just sitting at home, what are my options, is there any FREE courses i cant attend? college, school or something for free? i want to get experience, knowledge something just not to sit home

Yep sign up for as many courses as you can.

Just speaking for myself here but I always tried to keep as busy as possible with other activities also - mainly to keep my self-esteem up.
E.g. signing up with local angling club to clean up the river, help with St. VDP at Christmas, babysit, free DIY for friends etc.
The plus side is that 1) If you get interviews, you'll have something to talk about, 2) you might learn something interesting if you volunteer at something new and 3) you might meet people who can get you a job.

IMHO if you have time on your hands, and it costs you nothing then you should say yes to pretty much anything. It's a numbers game and someone/something will eventually lead to a job so the hard part is to keep motivating yourself to say yes.

a friend of mine who has a business diploma, was unemployed for over a year, done an evening course and got a related internship,they've offered her a job now for when it finishes

seems like the way to go imo

I'm in a similar situation. I went to FAS and they werent that much help She mostly said what I already knew; keep an eye on their website.

But she did tell me about Jobbridge. I'm actually writing up my cover letter to apply for one of those internships right now! You get €50 extra a week and the most important bit-experience!

visited fas just now, signed up for a Photoshop online course, woohoo.. at least ill receive a certification, while doing nothing and still looking for a job, keep myself busy, too bad you cant pass the exam straight away, as i am well experienced in Photoshop, oh well, ill see what they have, maybe ive learn something i dont know

em, just visit Fas and say i would like to register for online/day/night course and thats it, they will ask which course you want to apply (check on-line before you get to them) and they will email you the password and your login name to enter the ecollege.ie, from there you cant start the learning or take the test

Hi, i dont know if it will help, but as an EU citizen you can apply to colleges in Sweden and Norway for a free online college course. they are fully credited courses in many subjects, and have actual degree and master level courses.

I found hanging around in the pub on Friday evenings leads to work.

Im not joking.

Being social and getting your name around (especially in GAA followers and clubs) helps to no end.
FAS was no use to me at all. More dead ends and queuing up behind the masses. They wont find you work. You have to do that.

voluntary work is the way to go,i would advise against fas or jobridge,as they take what could be a paid job out of the community,and whether you like it or not by signing up to one,you are in turn contributing to the further poverty of the community at large..fas create unemployment its their job

pure nosense I know of people who have got full time positions after there intern finished. If an employee is thinking about creating a new post or taking some one on they cem try thtm out first. If there productive and contribute to the job they will be kept on

thats bs in my experience because i was taken on as a ce worker in 2009,for two years in a place that could well afford paid workers,and it didnt lead to full time employment in fact they abused their position as employers,by simply discarding the ce workers in question when their term finishsed and simply hired more free ce workers..thats exploitation,it was reported in the media around the time of the fas scandals..currently the government have no way in place of checking employers who are abusing the system they just let it happen..
It is very naive to think that once a company gets a free worker they will simply at the end of their term start hiring and paying them,why would they do that when they can get them for free?

pure nosense I know of people who have got full time positions after there intern finished. If an employee is thinking about creating a new post or taking some one on they cem try thtm out first. If there productive and contribute to the job they will be kept on

thats bs in my experience because i was taken on as a ce worker in 2009,for two years in a place that could well afford paid workers,and it didnt lead to full time employment in fact they abused their position as employers,by simply discarding the ce workers in question when their term finishsed and simply hired more free ce workers..thats exploitation,it was reported in the media around the time of the fas scandals..currently the government have no way in place of checking employers who are abusing the system they just let it happen..
It is very naive to think that once a company gets a free worker they will simply at the end of their term start hiring and paying them,why would they do that when they can get them for free?

Have you any qualifications? What jobs did you apply for. I'm talking about jobsbridge.

The people I know identified jobs that they saw a future in. With jobsbridge they can't keep taking on interns. Your obviously going for the low entry generalopetstive position. You need to select a career path and target companies who can help you progress to the desired position.

I'm in a full time job, but doing a masters at night to help me get where I want to .be.

Its only this years past i got my degree,i would think about doing the BA,but thats money for a course i dont have right now..
I wasnt on jobsbridge but wouldnt go on a free labour scheme ever again its just contributing to the exploitation of workers..For every FAS advertised 'job' you see,that could be a paid job,there joblockers nobody should sign up to them they contribute to mass unemployment.Its Fas's job to keep people out of employment..

with the attitude you have, you come across as unemployable.

We're a small enough company, 6 or 7 staff here in Ireland, a few in the UK and a few more in states. about 30 in total.

We busy, but not sure if we are busy enough to justify an extra staff member, what we do is highly specialised.

with Jobsbridge we can take someone on, get them experience, see how they fit into the company, if they add to the workforce and if there good we will keep them on. there starting salary would be 30k plus.


it's not providing free employment to us, it costs us, to train someone, provide a desk, computer, telephone, etc. probably about 20k per employee per year.

if we don't take them on the job was never there or there simply not up to it.

You say it costs you but you MAKE HUGE SAVINGS BY HIRING FREE WORKERS ,WHERE IS THE INCENTIVE TO GET IRISH PEOPLE BACK IN PAID EMPLOYMENT WHILE YOUR TOTTING UP THE SAVINGS..?

I said you come across as umemployable. Didn't say you were. I don't think jobsbridge is a seperate quango. I'm defending no one. I'm given a different perspective than the one your offering.

its been since widely reported since the fas scandals broke that the hiring rate of former fas ce workers was practically nill you can google that for yourself ...

use logic and think why would any company hire and PAY WORKERS when they can get them for free(eg welfare paying their wages)?

Because to get good work out of staff they need to be paid. There's a million other reasons. Staff need to be motivated. Go and read up on HRM. I'm to busy to educate you at the moment.

I agree they need to pay them if they want to get good work,but that doesnt matter to them when they can get you cheap,they dont care about quality or doing the job right if they can get you for nothing..which is what fas / jobsbridge is all about..

If its a job that doesn't matter if your good as long as its cheap. Then don't apply for an intern position. That is what jobs bridge is. From my experience is generally people witj qualifications or good skillsets that need to get some experience.

You need to remove the chip from your shoulder. Make your own destiny, don't blame others.

I dont have chip on the shoulder,but i think what FAS/Jobridge are doing on the ce/internships is wrong..
