Income tax question

    Hi there

    Hope this is the right forum to post this question in. Me (British) and my partner (Irish) have just moved to Ireland. We have a rather convoluted income tax situation and I have no idea where to start with the Irish vs British tax offices.

    In a nutshell our work situation is:

    He has worked for a British company for years and will continue to do so, just now it will be remotely from Ireland.
    I have my own business in the UK and receive an income from this, but I will also be trying to get a full time job in Ireland.
    I have a flat I own and rent out in the UK which generates a separate small income.

    I guess the UK and Irish governments will both feel they are entitled to tax from our earnings, but I have no idea where to start apportioning it, or who to officially contact to get the ball rolling from the Irish side.

    Does anyone know where I might begin? Thanks very much.

    There is a tax treaty between Ireland and the UK to avoid double taxation.

    As Chris linked to.. there is a tax treaty between both countries, so you only have to pay the tax once..

    In my case, I paid taxes in the country it was earned, and the revenue in that country would supply me with a letter detailing tax paid which I presented to the other country for tax clearance. I only needed to obtain letters for specific incomes (shares etc.) as both companies would declare, so I didnt want double taxation.. For income tax/benefits etc. it was declared within the country alone and no futher action required.

    Your very first step is to approach Welfare to apply for PPS numbers. You will need passport and proof of address for this, at least. Check their website for details.

    While you could approach Revenue yourself, I would strongly advise you to start with an accountant who is familiar with handling foreign business and rental incomes.

    Your issues are complex, and I don't believe that advise from randoms on the internet will serve you well.

    Am leaving the thread open, in case anyone can give "X happened to me" advice - but do remember that every case is different, and professional advice is probably essential.

    I personally have a small amount of foreign rental income, and handle my returns here myself. But I wouldn't be doing so if there was foreign business income too - way too many possible issues with VAT and the like.

    (I'm assuming that you have the services of an accountant in the UK for your business there.)
