Caddyshack is great, other films I can think of Legend of Bagger Vance and Bobby Jones.

The Greatest Game Ever Played, about the 1913 US Open is fantastic.

If you have Netflix (US version), there's a documentary called 'The Back Nine' which purports to be about a 40 year old 14 handicapper who sets about trying to turn pro, but is really a self-indulgent 90 minute naval gaze (best avoided imho)

Can't believe it's taken until the 3rd post for this but Happy Gilmore has to be the best comedy! Greatest game ever played as already mentioned is a must see

Tin Cup is good. Seven Days in Utopia is alright if you can ignore the cliche American religious bs .. "i wanna thank Jesus for this win" etc

I really liked tin cup and loved happy Gilmore. I saw bagger Vance and one with Shia lebeouf which were both terrible. I'll keep an eye out for the greatest game ever played.

The Greatest Game Ever Played is the one with Shia. Think I saw it before, didn't really like it. Tin Cup was class, and you can't beat Happy Gilmore

Really..? I don't know how anyone could come to that conclusion. You have to take it in context and it is after all a Disney family film. Some of the hard hitting realism is not there but the film is not just about the golf, it's about the class divide Ouimet faced and overcame to win the 1913 US Open. During the film it contrasts that to the same problems Harry Vardon faced during his career.

The film was extremely well received by critics at the time who I presume were not all golf fans, say's a lot really. For me I think it's by far the best golf movie and even beside the golfing aspect it's a good movie in it's own right. It's got a lot of history in it, while not exactly being totally accurate it dose pretty much stick to the actual events and back story of the characters real life counterparts. Would have thought every golf fan would have a copy of it in their collection.

Feck it, I should be studying for exams but I think I'm going to pull it out now and give it a watch :)

There's a decent Bobby Jones movie named "A stroke of genius" which is decent, but I much prefer golf books to golf movies.

I think movies tend to underplay the difficulty of the sport overall.

Actually, going off my original topic, what good books would you recommend? I wouldn't mind having one to just flick through now and again.

+1 for thinking 'The Greatest Game Ever Played' was poor enough.

Your run of the mill Disney movie, shame because its decent in parts and could've been much better.

Stick with Caddyshack and Tin Cup. Both about as good as it gets unfortunately.

I found this book about Tom Morris Snr. and Jnr. to be a brilliant read:

    http://www.amazon.com/Tommys-Honor-Morris-Founding-Father/dp/B000XKIFA4

It might be a bit different to what you are looking for though, I also really enjoyed:

I think Mark Frost who wrote it also wrote The Greatest Game Ever Played

Jesus KPH, Dave Fanning eat his heart out. That is very deep review of a Disney movie.

Can't wait to see it. But, I don't know if it will live up to book. Not joking, the book is the best book I have ever read. Not just about sport.

For some reason i cant stand golf films,
they always seem very false......actors with terrible swings but somehow the ball is shown flying long and straight every time, when theres no way it could! or else a "swing double" shown taking the shot.
Happy gilmore was hilarious, really enjoyed it(Adam sandler probably had the most realistic golf swing of any actor in a golf film)but i spent half the film thinking how crazy the whole idea was(i really need to lighten up:o)

    as for golf books,
    http://www.amazon.com/Caddy-Life-Bruce-Edwards-Story/dp/0316777889
i thought this was very good
also Colin Byrnes books are a good read
