The difference with pre 92 cars is that the emissions are higher, the reading must be below 3.5% CO but the rules regarding belts and plates are the same.

I second what JP 1800 said
the only difference is the emission limits, there re different ranges for different age brackets

Aside from higher emissions levels, the rules are the same for all cars from 1987(IIRC) on.

Are the not exempt from rear seat belts if none were fitted to that model?

Although rear seat belts were not legal requirements(in Ireland) pre 1992 most cars since the 80's had them fitted.

Maybe some one can say for definite what the story is.

Regardless of the legal requirements personally I dont think anyone should carry passengers in cars unless each of them has (and uses) a seat belt.

Which you can pass without a Cat installed.

Or without, depending on the engine.

I know the Corolla didn't get rear seatbelts till after 1989

Crap, thats what I meant! My 850CSi has the Cats removed and its basically 30year old engine tech and 5.6l and passed no problem.

This is incorrect - statute for reg plates for 1987 to 1992 cars requires black text on a white reflective background, you do not need all the county as gaelige and EU stuff.

Pre 1987 is covered by a different statute again, and is essentially a free for all in terms on reg plate requirements.

If your car didn't come with 3 point belts as standard you have no obligation to fit them.

I know that pre-92, lap belts are allowed in the back, but all cars from 92-on should have 3 point seat belts in all forward facing seats.
My 93 has lap belts in the back and it was the only fault they could find at the last nct, I had to get a letter from Mazda stating that the design of the car didn't allow for the fitting of 3 point belts in the back.

The middle rear in loads of cars have lap belts up to very recently if not still.

I had a mate with a 92 CRX that had to put 3 point belts in. The only place to mount the reel was at the back of the boot, so there wasn't enough slack to use the belt when you were sitting in the seat. Passed NCT though. A letter from Honda would have been far smarter.

You never have to add belts to a car that didn't originally have belts in it, but perhaps your mates car was not to original European spec. Jap import maybe?

    +1

My '96 7-series (and many high end exec cars) had a lap belt in the middle. This car was made from '94 to '01

Just checked the part of the nct manual that deals with seat belts
For vehicles registered on or after the 1st day of January 1992, check that all outer forward facing seats are provided with a lap and diagonal type safety belt and all other forward facing seats are provided with a lap and diagonal or a lap type safety belt.
I take it this is why the middle seat only needs a lap belt.

Yeah, it was an import, but I don't think that was the reason given. More to do with an NCT jobsworth.

I had had NCT people look for euro plates on pre 91 cars before. I had to appeal a fail because of this.
