Silestone counter top

I have a new cream silestone counter top and its hard work to say the least to keep it clean. Everything stains and marks it from overspills of tea, coffee to outline of vase left on counter after I have removed the vase. Also when I place my tesco grocery bag on it to unload the shopping if the bag is wet the colour stains the counter!

I rang the company that supplied and fitted it and at the start of the conversation he told me never use any cleaning product on it and at the end of the conversation he told me to use jif and a non nylon cloth. I have never used any product on it and only in desperation have had to dampen a cloth with bleach to remove a coffee stain or similiar.

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm begining to regret not getting a laminate counter top that would have been one fifth of the price.

Did you go for the polished finish or the leather finish?

We recently got the polished one. Our supplier also told us to use Jif to shift stains.

I gather the leather finish is more difficult to keep clean. We were supposed to go with that one and changed our mind due to availability.

    It is the polished finish.

Are you happy with your counter top? I can get over the regular stains needing to be cleaned like anything else but the stain of a ring of a cup left beside the sink or a faint ring where a vase of flowers was is cracking me up. Do you have the same problems with faint outlines where you had options placed?

Good luck with the move. We are in our house since xmas. Looking forward to see what you think of counter. Maybe I'm just expecting too much from it.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, currently residing in no broadband land.

We're finding it no more difficult than granite to maintain i.e. if you don't polish it you will see marks etc.

Jif has shifted anything on it so far, brings it up very well in a nice even finish.

Our is the Unsui colour though which is quite dark so that could explain our different experiences.

    Thanks SAS,

I am dissapointed with our counter top if I'm honest. I used the Jif cream and yes it did remove stains but it left a white coating when I rubbed my finger along it which I had guessed it would do.

Just a note about broadband. When we moved into our new house (which is in a very rural area) I had 02 plug in modem which was a disaster. We now have 3 wifi and it is much better. Works 98% of the time and the fact it is wifi is great.

Any chance you are using too much Jif? Herself does ours and it does go on with a very wet cloth and then gets taken off too. We don't have any hint of a residue and on a chocolate coloured counter top it would be very noticeable.

Thanks on the broadband. I'm playing with all of the options at the moment. It varies hugely area to area. My brother in law is pulling 5 mbs on an O2 mifi which was registering 1.5mb at my house. That was outside, inside I'm getting little or nothing.

I will try the jiff again and watch how much I use. I find the counter 'high maintenance' which I didn't realise it would be..........

I would agree that it's high maintenance, we were somewhat expecting that though.

We may be having exactly the same experience, we just started with different expectations :)

Our supplier recommended Milton spray to clean the countertop and told us to avoid Cif. We haven't moved in yet but maybe it's worth a try. It probably wouldn't leave a residue behind.

You sure its silestone, if you can look under any large peice of the counter, it will be embedded on it in black printed letters?. No problems with ours. Quick rub and its clean....hot water usually enough
