2nd overall on GC but he didn't start stage 6.

    Here's why.

    Shocking stuff.

That is properly disgraceful. My thoughts are with all of them.

Jesus H Christ. That is shocking.
A4 races here seem to be better organised.
Wonder if McQuaid will have anything to say about it?

So how's that global expansion going, Pat?

    What a disgrace.

That is shocking, it would seem that club races are better organised. Loads of quantity (plenty of motorbikes and ambulances) but no substance (they don't know what they are doing and are ill-equipped).

I hope he recovers well. I met him once on Mt Leinster, shortly before he won the ras by making the crucial move on the descent of same. Seemed like a nice guy.

    Astonishing!

It makes for a horrific read. I recall from Nico Roches book an ill fated race in Africa where rider safety was far down the list of priorities. Shameful.

my bro lives in Korea, I asked him before the start if it was going near where lives, so he could see it, but unfortunately it wasn't. he said they'd be lucky if they didn't get knocked down, when I said the roads would be closed he said that means nothing. he was almost creamed himself the other week on a not yet even finished, i.e. not completed yet road!

That story with the "doctor" is very typical of the sort of stories he's been telling me over the last 4 years, and one of the reasons he's finally moving back to Europe.

hope mccann recovers ok, and good luck to the rest of the cannonfodder

That sounds simply disgusting. Hope he's ok and won't have any long term effects (AFAIK he's already announced this will be his last year as a pro).

Disgraceful criminal negligence. I hope the injured riders make full recoveries.
I wish Bernard Hinault was in his prime and riding there. You know what would happen.

It seemed somewhat inappropriate as I clicked the icon to thank the OP.

I read that article 2 or 3 times before I could take it all in. Absolutely shocking

It made me think - why don't those guys simply refuse to ride in such conditions? Then I thought a lot of them are probably living on a shoestring. Sponsors want the coverage, and refusing to ride will probably cost riders their contracts and the prospect of new ones. A few grand win bonus may be season-high winnings for some of them

At that level, the sport is tough, but no-one should be made to put up with that, and the UCI should investigate such incidents, and put a stop to any races that do not provide adequately for the safety of the riders. There is no reason why they could not stop a race part way through if appropriate assurances are not made following incidents like that.

Any updates from anyone on how David McCann is doing? Can't find much on the interwebs about it at all...

I read a report today on stickybottle.com or irishcycling.com. Seems the damage to his hand isn't as bad as first feared but still serious.

RTS Facebook page here has McCann's take on events - I suspect that's where stickybottle got their story from

I read that diary a few times as well just to get my head around it. I've been on charity cycles that had better organisation than that. This is the most astonishing thing I've read on any pro cycling piece to date:

"I go to his car to get the first aid kit. The driver, a woman, shouts ‘NO!’ at me as I open the back door. There is no medical kit. Just a suitcase with clothes in it on the seat."

    Sweet jesus...

That's terrible news about the crash, truly shocking stuff. The guy was driving a 25 ton truck at 70 kph, whilst watching telly! WTF?
